EMRYS CHEW Assistant Professor of History at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. His research focuses on the interconnections between Asian and global history, with particular emphasis on the cross-cultural networks and exchanges that transformed warfare and strategy.

Possibly the ultimate niche book, good if the topic interests you, otherwise a crashing bore.

This may be close to the ultimate niche book, about the arms trade in the Indian Ocean in the 19th century (the author refers to the "long" century, 1789-1914 or so), This means largely European manufactured weapons to countries and entities in the general area (the term "country" does not really apply to all of them). Chew sees the periphery as not simply an area of victims of European trade, as some histories do, but as having considerable freedom of action, sometimes against the interests of the arms sellers, including the Ethiopians and the Afghans.
Most interesting to me is the trade to the Sulu area, and Burma. The scale of the trade was large, and Chew observes than the Europeans did not achieve definite arms superiority until the later 1800s.
