Reading the script for Caryl Churchill's 1979 play about sex and love is a special workout for the imagination. First, she asks you to imagine characters whose sexual identities and alliances shift constantly. Then she asks you to imagine that most of the characters make an impossible leap in time, from colonial Africa in the Victorian age to contemporary Britain. Lastly, she asks you to imagine some of the male characters played by women and some female characters played by men. Churchill likes to get things good and mixed up so all the audience's preconceptions about gender, romance, and "lifestyle" are scrambled, neutralized, and possibly even rebuilt. The title refers to the state of orgasmic and emotional bliss that everyone in this play seems to be striving for so desperately.

Caryl Churchill (1938-) is probably the most respected woman dramatist in the English-speaking world. The finest concise, illustrated summary I've seen on the subject. A picture does indeed speak a thousand words. The visual summary charts of the cardiac cycle, role of Doppler chocardiography assessing each cardiac chamber, starting with the right atrium, right ventricle, pulmonary artery and wedge pressures, as well as echo correlates of left-sided pressures are clearly presented. Great value for the price!

About the Author
After serving in the pastorate for seventeen years, Duane and Mary Laflin entered a full time traveling ministry that has taken them to nearly every state in the USA and to a number of foreign countries. They use gospel magic tricks to attract audiences and illustrate spirutual truth.

Their ministry has been a featured subject on the national radio program, The Osgood Files. Duane has also been seen performing tricks for television specials on The Discovery Channel and The Learning Channel.

Duane was the international president of the Fellowship of Christian Magicians for four years. He has written numerous pamphlets featuring gospel magic routines, published a magazine featuring gospel magic, produced five videos explaining gospel magic lessons and techniques, lectured and performed at every major convention of gospel magicians in the world, lectured and performed for nearly every major convention of secular magicians in America, and been a special guest performer and lecturer at the British Ring convention, which is one of the largest gatherings of magicians in Europe.

He also has been a guest lecturer at the Magic Castle in Hollywood, California.

Gospel Magic is the use of conjuring tricks to explain the Bible. It gives you a chance to communicate with people who would not listen to any other kind of Bible study, it gets you in doors where could not other wise go. Used correctly it persuades to follow Jesus. I know this from my experience
Duane Laflin has a lot more experience than I do. He has met for more people doing this craft than I have, and he describes the history of the craft going back to 1907 (when I did not know it went to before 1970). He has compiled a book on the best methods of performance, some of his favorite routines, and a aforementioned history.
He uses his experience, to describe the craft of creating a person, doing a seamless performance, and dealing with the sensitivities and concerns of church people while still gaining the interest of non-Christians. If you know some magic tricks and you would really like to communicate the Gospel using them, this book is for you. The study of persona building a performance is very valuable at whatever level you are performing. If you do not know any tricks yet, you would find this book very frustrating. It does not contain an introduction to magic, although it may contain enough about the secrets of tricks to ruin your fun when you are watching a magic show.
It also may be very little use to secular magicians who have no intention of ever performing a Gospel magic show. Most of the material may not apply to you.
For the correct readers, however, this book is invaluable. There is nothing else like it on the market.
