Drawing for Beginners: A Step-by-Step Guide to Successful Drawing

This book is wonderful for beginners like me who wants to learn drawing on his/her own pace.
There are four subjects of techniques: wildlife, people, countrysides, and buildings.
What draw my attention and interest is the wildlife section because I want to learn to draw
birds, all kind of birds. This book has many examples. Then the book opens me up to draw fox,
trees, houses, landscapes ... I just started my retirement and this book will definitely help me enjoy
the free time that I never had before to have fun and enrichment.

Do Not Buy This Book If You Want To Learn To Draw

The ad for this book is not only deceitful; it is an out and out lie! If you can not draw but want to learn how, buy another book as this one doesn't tell you anything about how to draw. This book might possibly be useful for an individual who already can draw and wants to become better but it gives no instruction to a beginner. The back of the book states "will teach the absolute beginner how to draw" BUT THAT IS SO FAR FROM THE TRUTH! The ad is a complete come-on, they are defrauding the public.

Excellent book for learning to draw

Drawing for Beginners is an excellent instruction book. The illustrations and written directions show how to draw using directional strokes and shading. Good for learning to move beyond flat-looking line drawing. Gives an overview of drawing tools and paper. Topics covered include: light and shade; composition; proportion and shapes; measuring in drawing; space and perspective; drawing flowers, plants, landscape, skies, trees, water, to name just a few. I especially wrote this review because I do find this book to be significantly valuable and, thus, was quite surprised by the one other review of this excellent book.

If In�s of My Soul isn't among Isabel Allende's best novels, it still tells a remarkable, ambitious, and heretofore untold story about one of the first female conquistadors of the New World. Allende finds so many surreal subplots in In�s's own story that the author's imagination, rather than magical realism, prevails in her attempt to recreate the 16th-century Americas. All aspects of the story entertain and educate. At the same time, the detractors have some complaints: Allende embarks on too many historical detours; she romanticizes the Spanish conquistadors; she takes a one-sided view of the native Chileans; and, in an attempt to appeal to fans of different genres, she creates a lightweight story from a very serious topic.

*Starred Review* Fiction about the conquistador experience in the New World (although a long list does not immediately come to mind) nevertheless can't possibly get better than Allende's treatment of the subject in her latest novel, which is based on the life of a real historical character. Ines Suarez was born in golden-age Spain; she traveled to that glittering country's South American empire in search of her husband, who previously had pulled up stakes and booked passage there in search of riches. In the novel's real time, Ines is 70 years old in the year 1580, and she puts stiffly held pen to paper to compose her memoirs, recording for posterity the events of quite an extraordinary life. Once in the New World, after learning her husband had died, Ines, with her innate smarts and fortitude, takes up with a man (one of Francisco Pizarro's former officers) who not only knocks her socks off (or whatever the equivalent of such an article of clothing was back in those days) but who also, together with her, proceeds to build the city of Santiago and forge the nation of Chile. Allende's novel broadens and deepens into a richly drawn depiction of the harshness of New World colonial life. She is an exquisite handler of historical detail, always conscious of keeping her story line above sinking beneath the particulars. Brad Hooper

Allende seems to have carved out her own style, her own niche genre, she must have a herd of researchers to excavate the true history of the Conquest of the Incas. Though word for word (I ma certain she was not made aware of it) her researchers handed her a line, that coes straight out of an history book on the Conquest of Peru, which I was simultaneously studying, If memory serves, it describes how Indians are chained together and as they display weakness or are dead, their heads are hacked off, and the climb continues. Her wit, creativity and genius far outweighs this minuscule act of borrowing, tough a careful reader must be conscious of it. I ouwld not assert his unless it were true.

Excellence achieved in terms of storytelling and historical insight. Isabel Allende took on a monumental task in terms of space, time, historical detail, context, and culture, while, from the beginning to the end, telling a fabulous, and so engaging a story. Really, fantastically well done. A fabulously enjoyable and educational read.

Isabel Allende, Chronicler of the Indies

I've enjoyed all of Isabel Allende's books but this is certainly one of her best. After I finished reading it I wanted to go back and begin reading again! In this sweeping historical novel Allende establishes herself as a 21st century chronicler of the conquest of Chile. In the process she restores In�s Su�rez to an appropriate level of importance and gives voice to the Mapuche Indians. (They tell part of the story and their words are part of the narrative.) This is not a black and white version of the conquest; it is nuanced with multiple perspectives. We hear from In�s (a European woman), Pedro de Valdivia (Spanish conquerer), Catalina (a quechua-speaking servant), Cecilia (an Incan princess), Felipe/Lautaro (Mapuche hero) and many more. Allende's gifts as a novelist and storyteller make this an appealing and unforgettable book. I can still picture the vivid descriptions of Chile and hear the clamor and war cries of battle. Throughout the saga the sentiments of believable characters breathe life into a sequence of historical events. In this compelling work Allende has created the lasting monument to In�s Su�rez.

About the Author
Eric Sams (1926-2004) was exceptional both as a musicologist, specialising in German lieder, and as a Shakespeare scholar. His fascination with lieder was first inspired by hearing recordings of Hugo Wolf songs in the collection of one of his schoolmasters. He had an exceptional gift for quoting at length the texts of almost of any verse, including the complete works of Shakespeare. He studied modern languages at Cambridge and then joined the Civil Service. He became a highly respected music critic, with a witty and allusive style, reviewing regularly for, among others, the Times Literary Supplement. He wrote several books, and specialized in the relationship between music and language, particularly the text settings of the Romantic song composers.

This is the Bible for lovers and scholars of the music of perhaps the greatest of all German song composers—and certainly the one who aimed the highest. Sams's knowledge is molecular-level, but he writes with unfailing elegance. Invaluable.

Much mentioned; seldom read

This is a new edition of the Harvard version of Justice Holmes' classic "The Common Law." It supercedes an earlier HUP edition published in 1963 which was edited by the esteemed Holmes scholar, Mark DeWolfe Howe. The original and continuing publisher of the official version of the book (first published in 1881) is Little, Brown. This edition is edited and has a fine brief introduction by Ted White, the current leading Holmes scholar, who teaches at the law school of the University of Virginia, and has written (among other books on the Justice) "Justice Olilver Wendell Holmes: Law and the Inner Self," certainly our finest and most interesting biography of the Justice.

Like its predecessor HUP volume, this edition contains the important marginal notes that Holmes entered into his own copy of the book (now in the HLS library), which do not appear in the official Little, Brown editions. Also included is Howe's "Glossary of Legal Terms." Professor White has added an illuminating chronology of the Justice's life, a helpful short bibliography, as well as his perceptive 26-page introduction. The typography is far superior to the earlier HUP edition. The only problem I can recount is that this edition (as was the case with Howe's edition) does not contain facsimile pages, so that the reset pages do not match the Little, Brown page numbers. Almost all citations to the book found in the literature cite to the Little, Brown version--so this is somewhat a disadvantage.

Unfortunately, not even Professor White's additions can make this an easy and readable book. I venture to suggest that very few of those who call themselves students of Holmes (including myself) have read much of the book. Moreover, having been published in 1881, it was long ago subplanted by more recent research in the field. Nonetheless, as White points out in his introduction, there are nuggets here for those interested in Holmes' view of the law, which in large measure sparked a few legal revolutions, including sociological jurisprudence and legal realism to name just two. This new edition makes this classic available in a reasonably-priced and pleasant format for those with the endurance to read it.

Valuable analysis still of our legal system

Holmes set out to explain from whence our American system of law arrived in it's present form in a series of lectures that may best be understood after practicing law but are accessible to any one who takes the time to read carefully what Holmes leaned by looking back. Holmes did the hard work with his research and has a gorgeous writing style.

Required reading (listening) for an understanding of our basic system of laws

Justice Holmes research and writing are impeccable and interesting. I read this 30 years ago and recently listened to the audible book, The "common law" is the basic theory of laws that forms the basis of the system of justice in those countries and states settled by English speaking people. Parts of it apply to much of the rest of the world. This book is an explanation of how and why the system evolved into our present justice system. The reader does an excellent job and I recommend this book without reservation. It is most interesting and should be required reading in high school or college.

Not a Beginners Book

I am over 60 years old and for 5 years have been trying to learn Spanish. I live in a Spanish community. This was one of two books I purchased in my efforts to learn the new language. Young minds accept information they are given; older minds try to make it fit with what they already know. It wasn't until someone gave me a primary school work book that I began to absorb the new language. The teaching format of this book is excellent and will help someone who has already studied Spanish. I've owned this book for over 4 years and hope to work my way into it over the next year or two.

Fforde's whimsical fifth novel, his first not to feature literary detective Thursday Next, is consistently witty, but its conceit—putting a criminal spin on nursery rhymes—wears a bit thin. Det. Jack Spratt, the dedicated but underappreciated investigator in the Reading, England, Nursery Crimes Division, is depressed because the court finds the three little pigs "not guilty of all charges relating to the first-degree murder of Mr. Wolff." Working with an ambitious young detective, Mary Mary ("Quite Contrary"), Spratt later takes on the case of "fall guy" Humpty Dumpty. Fforde crafts a police procedural out of this bizarre alternative universe that prizes, as The Eyre Affair does, literacy (detectives, for example, garner recognition less for solving crimes than by writing articles about cases for the likes of Amazing Crime Stories or Sleuth Illustrated). While it can be charming to encounter Mrs. Hubbard or Tom Thomm or to hear Spratt bemoan "illegal straw-into-gold dens" in this unusual context, the novel's broad satire overshadows elements like plot, conflict and characterization. The result is unusually clever but not compelling in the least.

Hearing characters debate the implications of "illegal straw-into-gold dens" is attractive to a certain type of reader. Puns and silliness can certainly provide laugh-out-loud fun, especially when cleverly handled. But critics found this new series debut from literary jokester Jasper Fforde (The Eyre Affair, **** Summer 2002, is from Fforde’s first series, Thursday Next) a tad shallow and wearisome. Fforde doesn’t skewer nursery rhymes exclusively; he also spoofs mystery fiction protocol, including anagrams, secret twins, and butlers who did it. This is actually his most ingenious turn in an otherwise overlong send-up.

Crime lies at the heart of the most innocent-seeming nursery stories: con games (The Emperor's New Clothes), counterfeiting (rumpelstiltskin), domestic violence (Punch and Judy), destruction of property and vigilantism (The Three Little Pigs). Fforde, who in his terrific Tuesday Next books (Something Rotten, 2004) enjoys deconstructing literature (Next is a cop charged with keeping the classics from falling into chaos), here launches a new detective series, set in Reading, England's no-respect Nursery Crime Division (their clues tend to come in threes). Detective Inspector Jack Spratt and Detective Sergeant Mary Mary are summoned to a trash-strewn and albumen-spattered yard where, at the foot of a wall, lie the mortal remains of one Mr. Dumpty. The British have a rich tradition of nonsense and whimsy, and Fforde is a worthy standard-bearer. But, as with puns, people are fans of silliness or they aren't, and as this book makes evident, literary in-jokes are more fun when the source material is more sophisticated. But Fforde is gaining fans, and even readers who start out groaning may find themselves grinning. Keir Graff

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Jack Spratt understands it all

by Jasper Fforde - Police officer Mary Mary get a new career by joining the NCD (Nursery Crime Division) where Jack Spratt is the head. By joining NCD she will get involved in crimes committed by individuals from all kinds of nursery rhymes. They do exist, you know.
In this book you`ll meet Humpty Dumpty, or more exact his dead shells. What start as a possible accident/suicide soon begin to look very suspicious with too many question marks. There is an ex wife, ex girlfriends, gold, a totally insane doctor at St. Cerebellum`s, titans and a beanstalk. There is Lola Vavoom the former moviestar and there is the Goring Foot Museum. There is so much more, like threads connecting over the pages like a knot being untied in the end, just in time for the holy highness the Jellyman to visit Reading.
The book is a typical Jasper Fforde. His remarkable sense of total craziness woven together with some feeling of an 50s detective novel - mixed with humor and all those little figures we know from nursery rhymes. Just we didn`t know what crooks they really are!
Jasper Fforde always catch my interest from the very first page. that`s what he does. And then you just don`t want to be disturbed before you`ve read the whole book. That`s the Fforde-mania.

READ this Very Funny Book! READ this Hilarious Book! READ this Hysterical Book!

This is a very funny book. Actually, it is hilarious. From a little past midpoint it becomes hysterical and stays that way all the way to the end. Jack Spratt is a flatfoot, a gumshoe, a copper, with a wife and too many kids and not enough money. He is rumpled, unattractive, and somewhat shy. He has managed by sheer dint of longevity to achieve the rank of DI (detective inspector) when he knows he could be a DCI (detective Chief inspector) except he has an outrageously flashy rival who continually steals his cases and his spotlight. DI Spratt runs the only (woefully understaffed and underfunded) department specializing in nursery crimes: that is, crimes committed by and/or against all your favorite nursery rhyme and fairy tale characters. Since the book begins with the investigation into exactly how Humpty Dumpty fell from the wall it's hardly spoilerish to relate that it's DI Jack Spratt and his very reluctant new assistant, DS (detective sergeant) Mary Mary (you read that right) who catch the case, a case that becomes more convoluted and confused as the book goes on. The more you know your nursery rhymes and fairy tales the funnier it is.

Scrambled Nursery Crime

Jack Spratt is in charge of the Nursery Crimes Division of Reading, a division on the verge of losing its budget thanks to his recent inability to convict the Three Little Pigs of murdering the Big Bad Wolf. Then the smashed remains of Humpty Dumpty are found next to a wall and Jack knows it wasn't suicide. Now Jack must find the murderer, save his misfit division, and keep sleuthing celebrity, DCI Friedland Chimes, off the case.

I absolutely loved The Big Over Easy. Thank you for the recommendation Polly! Each page is packed with nursery rhyme references but it never feels overwhelming as the passages are so matter-or-fact. It leaves you with this nagging feeling that these events actually happened. Fforde's dry, sarcastic humor kept my snickering and speeding through the novel. The Jack and the Beanstalk references killed me every time!

My only complaint is the climax chapters were too fast paced for me in comparison to the rest of the story. That's it for me but I did take some time to read the few negative reviews of The Big Over Easy. My response to them is: do NOT read this book if you don't like murder mysteries. It's a murder mystery that mocks the elaborate and showy nature of modern mystery development. How can you expect to like that when you don't enjoy mystery novels?! Other reviewers complain that Fforde is trying too hard to be clever and only includes all the nursery rhyme information to make his readers feel smart when they get the references. You've got to be kidding me. Yes, the clever jokes and writing style may be too much for some but I highly doubt Fforde is more concerned with boosting the ego of his readers over the need to provide a good complex story. My only advice for such thinkers is that you should get over yourself and learn to enjoy the mechanics and discipline required to write a well balanced story.

Fforde's jaw dropping ability to expertly meld so much research and detail in to one murder mystery has me wanting to be a better writer. I recommend The Big Over Easy to writers, as well as readers, as a prime example of a writing style that remains showing despite being so informational.
