Working at a London medical library, Judith Hinton is intrigued by Nick and Alix: he is a doctor who often uses the library, and she is his cultured wife who lets everyone know that she has "come down in the world." Judith is dazzled when they take her into their circle. She sees herself as an observant writer until she falls out of favor with the couple and their friends. Ultimately, this reading is uninvolving, perhaps because so many of the characters are tiresome. One wonders why Judith doesn't see through them. For larger collections.?Melody A. About the Author
Anita Brookner was born in south London in 1928, the daughter of a Polish immigrant family. She trained as an art historian, and worked at the Courtauld Institute of Art until her retirement in 1988. She published her first novel, A Start in Life, in 1981 and her twenty-fourth, Strangers, in 2009. Hotel du Lac won the 1984 Booker Prize. As well as fiction, Anita Brookner has published a number of volumes of art criticism.

A sharp and moving novel

The novel tells in dramatic detail how Nick and Alix Fraser casually break the heart of Frances Hinton, a well-behaved and observant young woman who works in the reference library of a medical research laboratory dedicated to the study of problems of human behaviour and who longs, in her subdued way, for love. She is an orderly young woman and Spartan in her habits. If she suffers loneliness it is because she has settled for the harsh habit of dealing with all matters by herself.
And soon Frances is disappointed in love. "I knew about love and its traps ... I never speak of it" and turns to writing as a form of therapy and escape, as a way to reorder her world. She writes when she feels swamped in her solitude and hidden by it, physically obscured by it and rendered invisible. Writing is her way of piping up, of reminding people that she is here. We may well guess how much of her own personality the author put in her heroine's character.
An altogether convincing portrait of failed love and solitude, reminiscent of so many of Anita Brookner's protagonists.

Adequate introduction to perspectives on peace & justice

Purchased this book for a class. It provides a solid overview of contemporary issues, although I find a number of Thompson's conclusions dubious. (His confidence in international/multilateral institutions and agreements is unwarranted; the assertion that "American colonialism seems indistinguishable from European colonialism" (p. 16) ignores the far larger scope of the latter.) Published in 2003, the material is somewhat out of date (i.e. no analysis of the impact of the U.S. invasion & occupation of Iraq). The synopsis of Catholic Social Teaching isn't bad, although the book certainly could have devoted much more space to the topic. (For a comprehensive treatment of Catholic Social Teaching, I recommend the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church.)

It's the bullseye book I've been looking for

Uncompromising, fearless, and accurate--this is the one I've waited for. Finally, a Christian who boldly tackles issues like sweatshops, the World Bank and IMF, militarization and its effects on poverty, America's role in arms sales to the Third World, the environment, and world peace. The facts, figures, and graphs are there for anyone who wants them, but it's not a dull government-style book. It's rebellious and astounding, and makes you feel like taking action. It's also loaded with relevant scripture examinations and lists of resources (organizations, books, nonprofit agencies) who attend to the issues Thompson raises.
Enough with silly sunday School classes about stories and opinions; THIS should be the textbook of sunday School classes of the truly justice-minded churches of America.

A great Introduction

This book by Prof. Thompson fills a gap in Catholic teaching on peace and justice. I would hope that this book gets wide circulation among clergy, especially deacons in the Catholic Church. This book gives a very good historical overview of the wide range of issues that Christian peacemakers face in the world.
As good as this book is as an introduction, I think an exploration of the fundamental principles of Catholic Social teaching would round off the presentation. Also, there is a need to discuss practical application of Catholic teaching such as Princpled Nonviolence and grassroots praxis.
The range and depth of the book is a welcome addition to a growing attempt by Catholic theologians and ethicists to apply the Gospel to the "signs of the times". Kudos for a job well done ! One will eagerly await the second volume of Christian praxis.

have to dig for info.

I would not buy this book again. Yes it gives you the info you need , but in such a round about way , it's not real useful. Bad purchase on my part. It would be good if I had years to study it but I don't, I need a book I can pick up and pick out the info I need for all the treatments I'm going through. Would not advise stage 4 patients to buy this unless all you have to do is sit with this book in your hand and study it.

About the Author
Bob Harris is a qualified psychotherapist, youth and community worker and teacher. He was a Principal Psychotherapist in the NHS for many years and currently works as a Clinical Consultant to the Priory Group, the Drug and Alcohol Foundation, and at a large GPs surgery. For several years he headed a project working with disaffected, often homeless young people on the streets in North London and has also been Consultant Psychotherapist at a Therapeutic Community for highly disturbed adolescents. He was Director of Programmes at the Institute of Group Analysis, London. He teaches on training courses for psychotherapists and supervises therapists in NHS units specializing in personality disorder and also at the Westminster Pastoral Foundation.

I beg your pudding

So here’s the thing, I think like most people who are going to read a book about the life of Bob Harris, you really want it to focus on the time that he spent presenting the Old Grey Whistle Test (being more of a fan that songwriter or musician gave Harris a unique perspective on the acts he encounters), but unfortunately, that’s only half the book.
The rest of the book is interesting & well written, telling how Harris struggled to find work, affairs, he fall out with fellow BBC DJ Bruno Brookes(!), fighting cancer & becomes the go-to guy for all things Country & Western.
It’s just a shame that Bob Harris couldn’t have written a kind of dairy-based biography about all the shows, & interviews that he made with Whistle test.

This is a good book for a basic understanding of transmissions. I fix my own cars at home and until now, I have avoided transmissions. Now it looks like I'm about to start tinkering with those.

Good Reference for any manual transmission

Good sturdy book with excellent photos. The writing style is very clear and progresses smoothly. Stays generic enough that I can use it for tractors and trucks instead of just a Nissan 300zx like some books will do. Excellent photos both in quality and in relevance.

Wish I had this book years ago...

This book includes wonderful pictures that follow a natural progression. Chapters are written with clear language and definitions of new terms. Chapters 3 (Problem and Diagnoses) and 4 (Rebuilding a Transmission) were my favorites. Chapter 3 walks the user through common problems and how to rule them in or out by isolating certain components. I had a tiny bit of experience with Honda B series transmissions before I read this book and I really wish I would have had this book then. I plan on rereading this book with a scrap transmission just to drive the points home even more. Definitely a keeper that I will refer my friends to!
