Hey...I'm the first one!

My biggest complaint with this book is its size: this is an over-sized volume and at almost 800 pages it's pretty heavy; it's nearly impossible to hold comfortably in one hand.

The author gushes about Modx in the intro chapter...that's more comforting than starting the book by saying "this product sucks" but it serves to warn that the author is a tad partial.

All-in-all, this is a really good book. The author addresses pretty much all of the issues that you need to know to develop a site with Modx and does so at a level that seems appropriate to most or all audiences. I do think you'd benefit by installing Modx and playing with it for a day or so before tackling the book...the book gave me many "aha!" moments when reading because I had already struggled with so many of the concepts. The author introduces liberal doses of "here-is-how-I-would-do-it" in the book and these are very appreciated; they serve to underscore areas and concepts that aren't necessarily intuitive.

Modx is a great Web development framework with many CMS-like features but there are powerful constructs and concepts that are really difficult for the newcomer to fully grasp. For example, a "site context" was something that I was sure was important but had no idea why. In a few quick paragraphs, the book showed me the power and the potential of site contexts within the first 30 pages or so. I had spent two hours trying to figure out how to do a certain task un-cached and was utterly defeated. The author solved the problem with a simple operator ([[!...). Duh.

Modx comes in two flavors: Evolution and Revolution. It appears to me that Revolution (essentially, Modx 2+) is a rework of the original framework where the developers decided to bite the bullet and throw out the bad ideas. To the Modx newbie, the differences between the two products aren't apparent at first and yet they are critical to know because it is easy to start researching a problem and heading off in a wrong direction because you have inadvertently stumbled across an Evolution discussion.

I recommend circling some passages with a pen or pencil and dog-earing the pages to come back to them. As I read sections of the book, my instinct was to go try some of the ideas presented but I think you're better off reading through most of the book skimming over sections that aren't immediately important. Then, go back and review those pages that contained valuable nuggets of code or procedures.

I've written a number of programming books and know how big of a job an undertaking of this scope is. Kudos to Bob Ray and his co-authors for a definitive work.

I am not a professional web site developper.

I have developped and maintain a dynamic web site(with PHP and MySql) for my hobby interest though. This site is more than a simple blog site and run on MODX.

When I started using MODX, I had a good understanding of HTML and CSS. I also had a working knowledge of JavaScript but no knowledge of PHP. There was a good series of modX site creation instructions on the coding pad blog (just google with "coding pad modx tutorial".) I gained most of working knowledge on MODX from this internet resource. The said tutorial get you going on constructing a database driven web site in relatively short time. Note that I also evaluated Joomla and Drupal at the same time, loaded them on the server and tried them out. In the end I chose MODX over them, mainly it allowed a direct transition from html based web site to dynamic web site. Other systems force you to set up the site their way. With MODX, I did not need to rewrite my html markup, my menu structure and/or my thought process. Infinite amount of fine tuning as to how the web site should look is possible with MODX.

During the course I started to learn PHP to appreciate the power of MODX. Thanks to my knowledge with JavaScript, learning PHP was not difficult. What was difficult was the way MODX let you utilize PHP in "MODX way"

I bought Bob's book the moment it came out. Aside from usual stuff that tells you how to build website without any coding, the most strong point of his book is about how you can vastly improve your site with a little PHP coding and let the MODX engine (with APIs that you can tap) take care of otherwise hard programming exercise.

This is a thick book. You need to skim through the book and get a feeling of what is available inside. Then while you are working on creating a site, and have some questions, you can go to the excellent table of index at the back and find a topic, read them through and apply to your project.

Case in point. Recently I needed a method to dynamically insert a CSS file at the section of particular pages. I remember seeing modx->regClientCSS in the online MODX page, but there was not much of an information other than the mention this can insert a CSS file. Enter Bob's book. Here is what is shown in this entry.

This is a completely revised edition of Applied Sedimentology, first published in 1988. Like its precursor, it describes sediments from sand grains to sedimentary basins. Part 1, Rock to Sediment, introduces the concept of the sedimentary cycle, describes weathering and soil formation, and details the fundamental physical properties of a sediment: texture, porosity, and permeability. Part 2, Sediment Sedimented, begins by describing the transportation and deposition of sediment and the resultant sedimentary structures. It ends with a description of the various depositional systems, sequence stratigraphy, and cyclicity. Part 3, Sediment to Rock, opens by describing how pressure, temperature, and fluid processes control petroleum and ore formation. It continues with accounts of the evolution of porosity and permeability in carbonates and sandstones. The last chapter describes the different types of sedimentary basins, their origins, depositional fill, and the evolution of their fluids. The book emphasizes the applications of sedimentology to the exploration for and exploitation of natural resources, including water, ores, and hydrocarbons. Applied Sedimentology is written principally for senior undergraduate and postgraduate students of earth science and engineering. It may also, however, prove useful to more mature readers who explore and exploit the sedimentary rocks for fossil fuels and mineral deposits.

Richard Selley has spent most of his career at the Royal School of Mines, Imperial College, London University, where he is Professor of Applied Sedimentology. Between 1969-75, however, he worked for oil companies in Libya, Greenland and the North Sea. The author has been awarded the Murchison Fund of the Geological Society. He has been a Distinguished Lecturer of the Petroleum Exploration Society of Australia and has been awarded a Certificate of Merit and a Survivor Certificate by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.

About the Author
Richard Selley is Professor of Applied Sedimentology in the Department of Geology, Imperial College, University of London. He has been involved in petroleum exploration across the globe and has published 5 text books and many papers on sedimentology and its application to petroleum exploration and production. Richard Selley has been awarded the Murchison Fund of the Geological Society, has been a Distinguished Lecturerof the Petroleum Exploration Society of Australia, and was awarded a Certificate of Merit by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists.

Beginning with the Phoenician traders more than 3000 years ago, mining today is an international business. This book has tried to reflect this international character by presenting a snapshot of the world of mining through a series of case studies. The publication is devoted strictly to underground mining and can be used for the training of new mining engineers as well as a reference book for those already in the field. The case studies in this book cover the commodity range from iron ore to diamonds extracted by operations located in all corners of the world. The book consists of 11 sections making up 77 chapters. The sections are entitled as follows: General Mine Design Considerations; Room-and-Pillar Mining of Hard Rock Room-and-Pillar Mining of Soft Rock; Longwall Mining of Hard Rock; Shrinkage Stopping; Sublevel Stoping Cut-and-Fill Mining; Sublevel Caving; Panel Caving; Foundations for Design; and Underground Mining Looks to the Future. For a New Start Professional to Seasoned Miner, this is a Great Book to Have in your Reference Library

I bought this book and another for an upcoming Professional Exam. Unfortunately, so while I studied and graduted in Engineering I did not specifically study mining engineering in college and pretty much need to learn an entire discipline in 3 months when it takes 4 or more years to do so.

In stark contrast to another book I purchased, this book is a standard of excellence. Not only is much of the information useful, clear and noteworthy it is easy to read and reads well. In other words, even though the book is purely technical in nature it was genuinely an enjoyable survey.

Most if not all of the contributors wrote compelling case studies, were forthright in the uniqueness of their situations and still tied it back to general principles and theories. They were frank, honest, ethical and seemed eager to pass wisdom.

Parts that were principle based and theoretical were in recognizable nomenclature, followed easily understood derivations and were bolstered with real examples that were also easy to follow. Calculations were straightforward and to the point. There were no surprise derived equation as in, Substitute Eq 5.1.300 in chapter 5 into this equation 29.33.200 in chapter 29 to get this partial equation for...

Finally, and I admit that this is silly, but in a dry world of handbooks where most technical reference books are either an offending bright primary color (ie SME Handbook 2nd Edition) or basically just a blank cover with letters, this book has a pretty cool cover images. Yes, it is silly, but into bought it and I am glad I did.

On My Top 10 List

This is a touching, gentle story of how a simple, over-looked bunny with a deformed paw gets to be the new Easter Bunny. The bunnies of Rabbit Hill are "tested" by a stranger who comes to them mysteriously in the night during a cold winter's storm. All the other bunnies reject him, but Early treats him kindly and earns the right to be the new Easter Bunny. Not only is the story wonderfully written, but the illustrations are beautifully drawn with lots of details. I'm a first grade teacher and have read thousands of books in my long career. This one rates in my top 10 for all time. I'm saddened to hear that it's out of print at this time. Barbara Martinez

The Story of the Easter Bunny

I read this book at Easter time for many years to my Brownie/Girl Scout troup. The girls never got tired of hearing the story, and actually looked forward to it every year, even as they got older. It is a wonderful story about compassion, respect, and overcoming odds to achieve something wonderful. A very fitting story for this time of year...it is full of simple truths about the power of having faith.

Perhaps my favorite book I've ever read to my kids

I found this book by accident. It was one of many books my kids randomly pulled off the shelves at the library one day.
Boy, is this a hidden gem! It's a little longish, has a lot of words per page, so it's not for kids with the shortest attention spans. Once they get to age three or four, though, and can sit through it, you'll want to read it to them again and again until they memorize it.
The story is nice, sweet, and engaging. The message, that being kind is "more important than anything," is *perfect*, and powerfully and dramatically told.
I can't recommend this book enough. There's no reason it shouldn't be a hugely successful, famous book. Get a copy for your own family, and get some more copies to give away as presents!
