Review
'As Waste to Wealth shows with case studies of leading companies across industries, the circular economy model works increasingly well for our customers and for us. You have to shed your old habits and put in the initial effort to change, but it makes so much sense. We can engineer products for a longer usage, we can recoup the residual value once the economic life is over. The customer is foremost interested in the benefit of our products, so why not only sell them the benefit as a service, while we retain ownership and operate the technology. And what about you?'
- Frans van Houten, CEO, Royal Philips
'Circular economy, circular responsibility, circular advantage. So simple, yet so powerful. This book is a practical contribution to future-proof your business models in an increasingly resource-constrained world. Not hard to see that in the age of transparency, citizens of this world will demand this from all companies seeking a license to operate. Time to get on with it.'
- Paul Polman, CEO, Unilever
'We need to face it: in order to make our economic system really sustainable, it is inevitable that we redesign it. This book shows the steps we can make. We will need to switch from a Linear to a Circular Economy. This means much more than recycling. The Circular Economy is about new ways of creating value via innovation and new business models.'
- Feike Sijbesma, CEO, Royal DSM
'Waste to Wealth captures the spirit of one of today's most significant business trends: the circular economy. Lacy and Rutqvist approach the topic in a straightforward and practical manner, underlining that the linear take-make-waste model is (or should be) on its way towards extinction. They clearly set out the need to unleash the true value and potential of materials, whether in their beginning-of-life, utilization, or end-of-initial-life phases. This approach has also inspired our work in the Carlsberg Circular Community, and I believe that any company pursuing sustainable growth can find valuable inspiration in this book.'
- Jrgen Buhl Rasmussen, President & CEO, Carlsberg
'We already use more resources than the planet is capable of regenerating so we have to find ways to utilize less energy, water, materials, and resources in general. In the chemical industry we are searching for ways to close product life cycles, whether at the outset (by using renewable sources), or at the end (by using recyclable materials). We need radical innovation to develop new technologies and new business models. The circular economy is part of the solution and this book will help us to take another step in the right direction.'
- Carlos Fadigas, CEO, Braskem

Finally a decent book on sustainability strategy
By Tj Webb
There's a saying about 'sustainability strategy' books in print, known by some of us who have worked in the space more than a few years. Most such books are best viewed in terms of utility as "soft, absorbent, and exceptionally strong" to quote the 1980's BBC series "Blackadder" (the original reference is to WWI propaganda newspapers). That's really not far off the truth. Most management and strategy books, at most, do little more than repeat the utterly obvious in sonorous tones, as if none of us had heard any of it before.
This book, despite being written by management consultants, is different, and extremely useful. There's a sentence I never thought I'd pen.
I liked it for a number of reasons. First, it's clear about the business advantage inherent in the circular economy business model. Most such books spend far too long framing the problems anyone outside of an amoeba on Saturn already knows, that the world and its human industrial and retail systems, are inherently and potentially fatally, unsustainable. Second, I like it because it doesn't repeat itself endlessly. Most books are 80,000 words padding out from a 20,000 word idea to meet the publishers length expectations for marketing and presentation. I'm not saying this book, as most other management or business books, doesn't have some repetition, it does, and to a degree that is inevitable. But the authors and their editors manage that well, or as well as one can expect. Thirdly, I like it because it's clearly structured, has flow and follows a path, a logical argument that the circular economy, that circular strategy, would follow in a business when implemented. The book is not perfect, it's assessment of the role of government, though far stronger than in most such tomes (which generally do a paragraph on the twin elephants in the room, policy and incentives) could be more detailed, despite that being a tough challenge. In conclusion this is one of the few books that does a decent job of 'owning' the subject more or less end to end, and will actually be useful for managers (yes, really) rather than wide eyed sustainability acolytes or students. Worth buying, and re-reading several times. And then giving to your CEO.

The Best Non-fiction Book You Will Read This Year
By Tinkerbell
Extraordinary would be an understatement. This book will be the definitive book on the circular economy for the next decade. It should be on the desk of every president, prime minister, CEO, university student - and just about anyone who wants to know how we really can turn it around for the next generation and the next. The author does an exquisite job presenting the data and the case for a circular economy. If you only read one non-fiction book this year - make it this one. Absolutely brilliant, ahead of its time and likely to influence thinkers/policies for years to come.
