How to send a 5 star book crashing into the 3 star universe

Once again, this is what happens when an amazing 2/3 meets a bad 1/3. This book was sooooo 5 star worthy. It had it all; great H/H (ignore the cover of this book - the heroine was very black and curvy), undeniable chemistry, and the sex was freaking AMAZING!!! I was so loving this book that I almost stopped at the halfway point to write my 5 star review; however, experience has taught me that such a thing could come back and bite me so I held off on reviewing this book until the end........and I'm glad I did.

I need for the Romance Writer's Association (yes, I made that up but it may actually exist) to officially ban certain plots/storylines, and sitting at the very top of that list should be "getting pregnant and running away" storylines,0. Geez, authors, that crap has been sooooooo overdone that it's just laughable now. You are way too talented for such contrived drama, Nadia Aidan. This story had "yes!!" written all over it until it got to the 60% point on my Kindle/IPad. The moment I realize where this story was going, I screwed up my mouth, rolled my eyes, and let out a very disappointed sigh. I cannot stand books where the heroine indulges in behavior that can lead to pregnancy, gets pregnants and runs away - leaving the father in the dark about said pregnancy. I just can't with such storylines. It would be understandable if this was a young adult romance, but not the case when you have two mature adults involved. I really need for that type of storyline to be banned stat. I'm soooo not happy because that ruined the entire story for me. It even soured me on the HEA. Do better authors.

Absolutely DELICIOUS read, DEVOURED EVERY WORD.....

Absolutely FABULOUS, WONDERFUL, AMAZING and an EXCITING read. Such charater development and Amir and Daniella were so made for each other. The sex was so hot and steamy that It had me melting into a puddle. Amir was such an alpha male and a take charge kind of gentleman and Daniella's submissive nature was the cherry to his drink. And I must say again the "SEX WAS TOTALLY HOT, HOT, HOT....!!!" This book left me breathless... And such a HEA. I simply must locate every thing written by this author, Nadia Aidan you definitely know how to bring life to your words in print. I can't wait for the Second installment, hurry please...!!!

Insanely overpriced.

Compared to other manuals or how-to books this textbook, like most other textbooks, is incredibly overpriced and not more useful or instructive than many others currently on the market.

I was forced to purchase it through the instructor and his syllabus for the class I was taking. In and of itself it is a nicely laid out, clearly written manual. Then again, so are many others at at least half the price.

I find all textbooks to be overpriced and this is no different- however, this book is easy to understand, thoughtfully laid out and was an excellent learning tool. I'm glad I had to use it for class and that I got a great buy back price on it when I sent it back. All-in-all a great book.

interesting setting and dramatic presence, but cardboard characters.

Started out well, with a ritual killing on an island off Northumberland, but the characters had the depth of crepes. The author did a good job of conveying what it's like to live on an island and describing the relationships between different strata of society, but what comes out of the characters mouths is flat at best. Feelings, even when expressed, sound suppressed beyond even British reticence. Author has potential but needs coaching or mentoring to create fully realized characters. I know she sells a lot of books.... but she could reach a larger audience by beefing up her characters.

Picturesque beef cake...

Holy Island is a well written mystery thriller set on a picturesque British Isle. In fact the author describes the setting so well it made me want to visit there, and I actually looked up the place, called Lindisfarne to see if it really existed. (It does).

My only real beef with the book is, well, the beef - in the form of Detective Chief Inspector Maxwell Ryan. The aforementioned DCI Ryan has his own series and this is my very first time delving into it. It quickly becomes very obvious this was written by a woman, with visions of seduction by the world's handsomest detective. DCI Ryan, supposedly also one of the world's greatest detectives, throws every caution to the wind and falls madly for one of the women involved in a series of murders on the tiny island, and this is where I was let down. All appearances of professionalism vanish the second he lays eyes on Anna. If a detective in the real world acted this way he wouldn't be a detective very long and there wouldn't be a series of books. In the process he also overlooks several obvious clues and fails to follow up on obvious details and events. Perhaps due to his distraction?

And since everyone likes to nitpick: 'mini' means anything small - like a mini skirt. 'Mini' as used in this book is a brand of car owned by BMW and must be capitalized - something the author failed to do throughout the book for some strange reason.

In any case, if you can overlook the over the top hyper masculinity, which I thought went out with the bodice ripping women's novels of past decades (and apparently most women can overlook it considering the author's popularity), then it's a pretty good mystery thriller, told rather beautifully. And the twist at the end is completely unexpected, not to mention shocking.

Preposterous and riddled with factual errors

This book can't decide if it wants to be a police procedural, a Harlequin romance, or a Stephen King horror story. The writing is startlingly uneven and riddled with factual errors. It goes along like a perfectly decent murder mystery for a time, but then you hit some jarring error like the tide going out when it needed to be coming in (to cut off access to the tidal island); or the attraction between the two lead characters veers off into ridiculous internal dialogue or bodice-ripping action; or a seemingly decent, sympathetic character is revealed to be a drug-using Satan-worshipper. I began to wonder whether three different authors had alternated sections, challenging each other to find a way to continue the narrative after ever-more-bizarre plot turns. The plot becomes progressively more preposterous as it goes along, generating lots of eye-rolling on the part of this reader, and culminates in a cartoon-ish last-second rescue (on a dark and stormy night!). The mystery is that whole sections are written quite competently, and I have to think that with the help of a good editor, this could have been a dramatically better book.

Excellent basic intro to Image Processing

This older book is an excellent gentle introduction to digital image processing for those who have not yet had calculus, or for those who want to understand the basics before taking on the more daunting task of reading and understanding something like Gonzales & Woods, which is the standard graduate image processing text. The book begins with the basics of the various color spaces and how images are perceived by the human vision system. From that point, the chapters are grouped into the types of image transformations. Formulas are explained either graphically or with very simple mathematical notation. Before and after pictures are provided for each transformation. In chapter five, the author goes into some introductory computer vision and object recognition techniques. The handling of morphological processing is exceptional. The chapter on image compression does a good basic job of getting its ideas across to the reader. However, only the most basic compression techniques are explained in detail such as truncation and Huffman coding. JPEG and motion compression are just verbally described, due to the introductory nature of this text. More recent compression methods such as those involving wavelets are omitted. Part four of the book, "Image Operation Studies", is effective at hammering home what was discussed in the first three parts of the book. In part four, the author describes the algorithmic implementation of 39 of the image transformations described in the book, with the resulting images. This makes for an excellent summary and review for the student. The software on the book's companion disk has long ago become obsolete, but the ideas presented in the book are clear and great for any beginner in the field.

If you want to start with and understand digital image processing from its basic, this is the right book. Without too much maths it gets you to the point of what can be done, and how it can be done. It helped me to achieve a basic understanding from the zero level.

I absolutely love the OSHO books. Straight forward and profound at the same time, long enough to let his messages sink in but not too long to get burnt out. Absolute Tao has some very juicy questions and even better answers by the legend himself. Lao Tzu was very special to Osho, and he has some surprising things to say in this one. I highly recommend this book to my Daoist friends and those who love high caliber spiritual books.
