Excellent Introductory Text

This text has provided me with an excellent grounding in the field of ecofeminism. The selection of essays included provide a nice range of the various ways ecofeminism is represented in the disciplines and used politically in society. The essays themselves are very clearly written and I found their bibliographies especially helpful in leading me to other more specific sources on the particular foci within this umbrella topic.

In particular, I really valued the inclusion of the following selections: Ecofeminism through an Anticolonial Framework (interesting critique of general feminism and a nice example of a politically motivated piece); Ecofeminist Literary Criticism (great bibliography and linkage to other theoretical pieces); and Androcentrism and Anthrpocentrism.

I would definitely recommend this text to anyone wanting an introductory overview of ecofeminism.

This is an excellent book for anyone interested in ecofeminist theory. It contains a collection of essays by various authors on ecological problems and how those problems are linked to the oppression of minorities.It contains empirical data to back claims and provides a clear convincing argument for the movement.

Really enjoyed this textbook. It did a good job of explaining the pro's and con's of each strategy implemented. I am not without my criticisms of its terms/categorizations, but overall, I benefited from it's step-by-step explanations of the 7 strategies.

About the Author
David Matsumoto is a world-renowned expert in the fields of emotion, nonverbal behavior, deception, and culture. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan in 1981, double majoring in psychology and Japanese, and his Masters (1983) and Doctoral (1986) degrees in Psychology from the University of California at Berkeley. He has been a Professor of Psychology at San Francisco State University (SFSU) since 1989, and is the Founder and Director of SFSU's Culture and Emotion Research Laboratory. He has produced over 400 academic works, including books, journal articles, book chapters, and conference presentations. His books include well-known titles such as the APA HANDBOOK OF NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION (ed.), NONVERBAL COMMUNICATION: SCIENCE AND APPLICATION (ed.), the CAMBRIDGE DICTIONARY OF PSYCHOLOGY (ed.), CROSS-CULTURAL RESEARCH METHODS IN PSYCHOLOGY (ed.), the APA HANDBOOK OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION (ed.), the APA HANDBOOK OF INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION (ed.), and THE HANDBOOK OF CULTURE AND PSYCHOLOGY (ed.). He is the recipient of many awards and honors in the field of psychology, and is a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science and the International Academy of Intercultural Research. Linda Juang is a Professor of Education at the University of Potsdam, Germany. She earned her B.A. in Child Development from the University of Minnesota, her M.A. (1995) and Ph.D. (1997) in Developmental Psychology from Michigan State University, and was a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Jena in Germany for three years. She served on the faculty at San Francisco State University for 11 years. Her research focuses on adolescent development in family, school, and cultural contexts. She co-edited a handbook on Asian American and Pacific Islander Children and Mental Health and has published journal articles, book chapters, and presented studies concerning ethnic identity, discrimination, acculturation, and well-being of adolescents and young adults in the U.S., China, and Germany. She is a Fellow of the Asian American Psychological Association.

Looking at psychology from a different perspective

Great book, but can become boring if you spend long amounts of time reading it. I didn't notice it before buying it, but the cover says that it should't be sold in the US. It worked just fine for the class that I was taking though. It brought up how must psychology is fake because it only focuses on college students in America. Tons of interesting topics that challenge modern accepted psychological facts. Overall this is a very interesting book about psychology. May not be good for someone who is just starting to learn about psychology because it barely covers the american studies.

This Book Is Definitely A Big Deal!

After reading Danni Keane's "Not Letting Go," which features the same characters as this novel, I was very excited to read the continuation, and I wasn't disappointed in the least. Josh's happiest moments are when he's with his boyfriend, Bradley, and with his father's death and his decision not to go to university looming in the background, stress is coming at him from different angles. But it seems like all of that can be pushed to the side when Bradley moves in with him. They become even closer, even having their first time together, but soon Bradley is starting to pull away from Josh's advances, and Josh doesn't understand why. He has to learn that at eighteen, love is more difficult than he thought.

But it's not just about Josh and Bradley navigating a relationship. It's about Josh growing up and learning to deal with the emotional baggage of his dad dying, and the relationship he has with his mom. He doesn't want to acknowledge that things have changed, but they have, and when he finds out the reason Bradley has been getting dodgy with him, it hits close to him and forces him to re-examine everything. The emotions at this book hit hard, both in the ecstatic highs and the depressing lows. Keane marvelously crafts a story where you experience all of Josh's feelings and watch his relationships with his family and his boyfriend evolve.

The characters are vivid and for two young adults, their struggles and emotions are so palpable that I was carried through the entire book on the ride with them. But the issues extend beyond their age, and I think people of many ages could relate to this book.

I absolutely loved this book, and would highly recommend it. I look forward to Keane's future works.

I really enjoyed this quiet little story. Two British teenagers, after the British equivalent of American high school, are trying to figure things out—work, school, family, life, their relationship, each other. (I classify the novel as closer to New Adult than YA because of where they are in their lives and the kinds of things they're dealing with (although they fall into the YA age range).) Josh's dad has recently died, so he and his mum are trying to adjust, and both Josh and Bradley are trying to decide what to do with their lives now (and how to make it work with the other person's plans). It's very much a character-driven story rather than action-driven, but it kept me hooked and I read it quickly. By "character-driven," I don't mean that nothing happens, but we're heavily focused on the guys living their lives and learning how to be in a relationship. There's a lot of real-life stuff in this, and she does that all very well—all of the annoying truths, like how to live with someone, and what to do with the hole in your life after someone dies, and what do you do when the person you love starts pulling away and won't talk to you about it, and how to deal with (or not) being in love for the first time.

Neither of the guys is perfect, but if they were, a) they wouldn't be real teenagers, and b) the story would be boring. We never get into heavy omg-I'm-going-to-die angst, but there's enough drama to keep things lively (and a bit sad).

I really like Danni Keane's writing. Her writing reminds me a bit of Jay Northcote's--easy to read, character-focused, nothing extra or unnecessary. The characters are warm and believable (Josh's sister drove me nuts, but I guess that's what older sisters do). As a note, because I know some people care, this novel is in first person present, which I absolutely love but I know some people don't. But if that's the only thing holding you back from reading it, I recommend giving it a try anyway. It's not obviously written, so you might find you don't mind. :)

There is a prequel to this book, "Not Letting Go," comprising two short stories. While I don't think it's 100% necessary to read it before this, I strongly recommend you do (it's free! and short!)--it gives you good background on what's happening in the book, particularly with Josh, and the author herself recommends reading the prequel first.

No Big Deal was a sweet story with enjoyable characters and contained a plot twist that isn’t seen a lot in M/M.

Josh is a young man who’s had a tough year after dealing with the death of his father. Thankfully, he’s still got his mother and his boyfriend, Bradley. Josh and Bradley were a cute couple for sure, and I liked having the story start with them already together. Their emotions were portrayed well and I could tell they cared for their each other.

At the beginning of the story, Josh and Bradley haven’t had sex yet, though that is quickly remedied when Josh’s mother leaves for the weekend. The sex between the young men was really realistic, in that neither one lasted very long once inside the other. The term ‘minute-men’ came to mind. Perfect.

With any young men there was drama of course and Josh and Bradley have their fair share, including what to do with their lives and where to live. The biggest issue occurred when Bradley began to withdraw and stopped having sex. Josh fears Bradley is cheating on him but that isn’t the case.
The truth is that Bradley has a lump on a testicle and feels awkward about having sex. Josh freaks out since his father died of cancer, but in typical young man fashion, Bradley thinks it’s no big deal. I understood both guy’s stances here and the author excellently depicted their concerns.

There were times I wanted to choke both young men and get them to just calm down and actually talk and listen to each other. However, there aren’t mean 19-year-old men who aren’t obstinate and stubborn-headed. They do eventually open up and everything gets figured out.
