About the Author

Ann Turnbull has been a professor, teacher, researcher, and advocate for individuals with disabilities, their families, and service providers for 4 decades. She is currently the Ross and Marianna Beach Distinguished Professor of Special Education and Co-director of the Beach Center on Disability at the University of Kansas.

In 1988, Ann was the co-founder of the Beach Center on Disability which is a vital hub of national and international research and development on contemporary issues impacting the quality of life for individuals with disabilities and their families. In 1999, she was selected by 7 professional and family organizations as one of 36 individuals who “changed the course of history for individuals with intellectual disabilities in the 20th century.” Ann has provided leadership in national professional and family organizations, including being the President of the American Association on Intellectual Disabilities. She was selected in 1990 for the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy International Leadership Award, as well as for The Arc’s Distinguished Research Award in 2004. In addition to her professional credentials, she is the parent of three children, one of whom, Jay (1967-2009), was an adult son with multiple disabilities who had what Ann describes as an "enviable life" in terms of his inclusion; productivity; and contributions to his family, friends, and community.

Rud Turnbull III, a self-described student of the human condition in a disability policy context, is a researcher, teacher, consultant, and advocate in the field of developmental disabilities. With his wife Ann, he is co-founder and co-director of the Beach Center on Disabilities. He is a Distinguished Professor, in special education, and is also Professor of Law at the University of Kansas Law School. His research has addressed nearly 20 different issues of disability policy and has qualified him to be an expert witness before Congressional committees and draftsman of state and federal statutes, regulations, and proclamations. He has served as chairman of the board of trustees of the Judge David L. Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law; president, American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disability; chairman, American Bar Association Commission on Disability Law; secretary, The Arc of the United States; and treasurer, The Association for Persons with Severe Disabilities. He has received peer recognition as one of 36 people who, in the 20th Century, “changed the course of history in mental retardation”. He is a graduate of Kent School, Kent, CT; Johns Hopkins University; University of Maryland Law School; and Harvard Law School (post-graduate degree).

Michael L. Wehmeyer, is Professor of Special Education; Director, Kansas University Center on Developmental Disabilities; and Senior Scientist and Co-Director, Beach Center on Disability, all at the University of Kansas. Dr. Wehmeyer has directed externally funded projects totaling almost $30 million conducting research and model development activities and personnel and leadership preparation activities pertaining to the education and support of youth and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He is the author or co-author of over 300 peer-reviewed journal articles or book chapters and has authored, co-authored, edited, or co-edited 32 books on disability and education related issues. Dr. Wehmeyer is Past-President of the Board of Directors for and a Fellow of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD); a past president of the Council for Exceptional Children’s Division on Career Development and Transition (DCDT); a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA), Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Division (Div. 33); and Vice-President for the Americas and a Fellow of the International Association for the Scientific Study of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IASSIDD). In 2013, Dr. Wehmeyer was awarded the Distinguished Researcher Award for lifetime contributions to research in intellectual disability by The Arc of the United States.

Karrie A. Shogren, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Special Education. Dr. Shogren's research focuses on self-determination and systems of support for students with disabilities and she has a specific interest in the multiple, nested contextual factors that impact student outcomes. Dr. Shogren has published over 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals, is the author or co-author of 5 books, and is one of the co-authors of Intellectual Disability: Definition, Classification, and Systems of Support, the 11th Edition of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities' seminal definition of intellectual disability (formerly mental retardation). Dr. Shogren has received grant funding from several sources, including the Institute of Education Sciences (IES). Dr. Shogren is co-Editor of Inclusion (with Michael L. Wehmeyer, Ph.D.), a new e-journal published by the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, and is an Associate Editor for Remedial and Special Education and Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities.

The Compound Effect

The Compound Effect will likely not go down as the next Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, but it is worth a quick read. I certainly question the reviewers who say they've read and have a library of hundreds of self-help books and this one replaces them all. Darren grew up with a Dad that pushed him, he succeeded and now runs a successful company that puts out loads of mostly helpful tidbits. This is written in a direct style. It is not elegant (like CS Lewis Mere Christianity, which is about values/paths/focus). This is more like reading...well...his magazine. Keep in mind that we humans have plenty of information (do you really not know that pizza and beer makes you fat and veggies make you thin yet?), but we need constant reminders. This book is a reminder.

I'm in finance and have read maybe 25 similar books (from Dalai Lama to Anthony Robbins)and I do give credit to the book for enlightening me on one thing. I knew that a penny compounded daily for a month was much more valuable than being given $10k. I did not ever apply the principle to my behaviour. I was always putting a marathon on the calendar and failing. Since reading the boook, I do yoga, weights, run--but just a little of one or the other each day. I made simple positive changes and am seeing them slowly but surely compound.

So, thanks Darren. Your book made a difference and I and my wife, 3 kids and others around me are better for it.

The Little Things Count!

This book by Darren Hardy, publisher of Success magazine, shows you how seemingly insignificant changes can create huge differences in outcomes. That's what makes the strategies in his book so doable. You don't have to set an unreachable goal to be successful. Instead, you just need to keep doing the little things - even when the immediate results aren't apparent.

As Darren so clearly demonstrates, it's your habits and choices that make the difference. And, he shows you how understanding your "why-power" enables you to make the daily changes that yield massive results. Personally, I enjoyed learning about his own success habits too. Very impressive. I have a lot to learn from him!

To sum it all up: The little things you do add up to success - so do them. This easy-to-read book is motivational, filled with lots of "how to" advice and definitely worthwhile.

Deja Vu? Been there, read this!

If you are brand new to any self help, success oriented books or audio then this might be eye opening to you.

However, if you are an avid reader of such topics then you will find that this book/audio is basically a greatest hits of other people's work, some credited, but much plagiarized without acknowledgment. Now, most if not all self help gurus share similar concepts and information usually by putting their own spin on it so it can be more easily understood or create a light going off in your head but The Slight Edge (where the entire premise is the compound effect) by Jeff Olsen, 212, The Extra Degree and Pump Handles by Zig Ziglar are quoted verbatim (or extremely close to it) without credit to the authors, and they were all published first.

If you read Success Magazine (and you should) then you'll also hear a lot of references from past articles you may have already read. This along with motivational quotes and stories (Jim Rohn, Jack Canfield, etc.) make this book an excellent read. Original and groundbreaking? No. Will it get you headed in the right direction? Only if you apply it. Would I recommend it first? No, pick up The Slight Edge or subscribe to Jim Rohn's newsletter (it's free) and start there, this book is more of a refresher course rather than one of the Masters.

I could also do without the bragging about Mr. Hardy's accomplishments throughout, John Maxwell, Earl Nightingale, Earl Schaoff, Jim Rohn and all the greats don't do that stuff, they let their teachings speak for themselves or use examples of how other people succeeded from their guidance (which Hardy does at times) but Mr Hardy, repeatedly saying he became a millionaire in his early 20's adding in that he found the perfect wife (based on a 40 page list of requirements) can come across as immature, insecure and a bit anal.

Again, this book has merit just don't get turned off by the ego, maybe it's excitement.

What if I never found this book ?

I am so glad that I make a habit of paying attention to references from other authors. As I'm reading The Road Less Traveled, I noticed in M. Scott Peck's book, that he quoted Wheelis's book. I don't know if I would have ever heard of this of little gem of a book, so full of powerful words, if I hadn't noticed the title looking at me at the bottom of page 43 in TRLT. As someone who was treated as target practice physically as a child by my mother, but damaged even more so psychologically, it was so soothing to be able to relate to Wheelis's account of his father's treatment of him and how the author's acceptance of his father's opinion as fact, maintained a stronghold on the choices he made through adult life. He so articulately, using some great analogies to really drive in the concepts, demonstrated that it's only your *acceptance* of the verdict brought upon by adults in your childhood life that make your life tough now. Once you can trace your current behaviour to experiences as a youth, you see the freedom you really have in your reactions to life in the present. I'll stop now, because It's obvious I'm not a writer - just very passionate about letting people know how effective this book can really be. Look at it like this guy Wheelis met you in person, took you to lunch, and he let you in on what he found out as a psychoanalyst, about how the guilt brought upon him in childhood, and the value judgements that he accepted as true, truly messed with the actual physiological reactions (steel fingers around the heart when he's put on the spot socially) to social situations he still experiences in his 60's. But this book is way better than that lunch with him in person. There's a lot more material than just an hour of conversation, and it's always there, and you can understand so much by re-reading and re-reading, and that's what I've done, with more understanding each time I re-read it.

Change is a daunting task

This compulsively readable book explores the nature of suffering, freedom, insight,will, action, and change. What elsewhere is elaborated upon in volumes is here explored in less than 120 pages. How you ask? He writes incisivley and "cuts to the quick!"
Among the many "things" Wheelis takes on is the question of who and what we are. He, like the behaviorists or existentialists, concludes we are what we do. If actions define a man those which are repetitious become self sustaining and with time's passage, highly resistant to change. Acts or events which in the past shape us, become not just something we know but rather "a rule of mental operation" or what we are. So how do people change? Change may occur within the context of varying circumstances. People may change from within spontaneously and unthinkingly as the result of physiological changes as is the case in adolesence or old age. Likewise, they may change by force of external circumstances as in the case of survivors of POW camps. Finally people may change from within, consciously, deliberately and by design. But deliberative change is a tale of immense difficulty. Why, because no one can do the deed but oneself. At its very best therapy may be "catalytic"and insight illuminating but neither can get the"job" done. According to Wheelis both may mean little or nothing at all. If the "job" of change is to be accomplished it can only be brought about through intention, will, determination and action.
To change oneself is a daunting task for which there are no guarantees. In a metaphoric sense, when we attempt to change we become not only the sculptor but the marble to be worked upon as well

Wheelis might argue that my writing this review is a conundrum: mandatory necessity versus arbitrary necessity. I cannot or will not answer that question. Suffice it to say that you the reader ought to make the time to read this slim book.
His writing is embarrassingly succinct and refreshingly frank. Thus, the book invites several readings; I have read it several times. Keep in mind that the subject of this book is self-directed change. "So long as one lives, change is possible; but the longer such behavior is continued the more force and authority it acquires." How then do we change? "Insight is instrumental to change, often an essential part of the process, but does not directly achieve it."
The author, to his credit, includes himself as a portrait of one who struggles with change. Read the chapter entitled "Grass." A friend, reading it, refused to borrow the book. She condemned the story as an example of child abuse. Superficially, it certainly seems so. One cannot avoid, however, the poignancy of the father's heartfelt remarks, "I wish you could understand, though, that I wouldn't be trying to teach you so fast if I knew I would live long enough to teach you more slowly." The father lay sick with tuberculosis, dying but months later.
Wheelis puts the story in context that will resonate with all who read it: "Thus I was made a psychological slave." But, "A slave is one who accepts the identity ascribed to him by a master." So, can one change? How? I cannot answer that question. I can give you one last quote from Wheelis, "The new mode will be experienced as difficult, unpleasant, forced, unnatural, anxiety-provoking. It may be undertaken lightly but can be sustained only by considerable effort of will. Change will occur only if such action is maintained over a long period of time."
Or, was B.F. Skinner more correct? "A person does not act upon the world, the world acts upon him."

Very disappointed. I order most of my textbooks through Kindle for the ease of transporting my books on a thin, light devise. It usually works out great. This one, not so much. The charts and boxes (full of very important information) are fuzzy at best. In addition, the access code to the online site that instructors use with this book is not included. I now must buy a hard copy of this book at the same cogs to get the access code and to be able to read the boxes.

About the Author
Annalisa Berta is Professor of Biology in the Department of Biology at San Diego State University, San Diego, California and a Research Associate at the San Diego Natural History Museum in San Diego, California and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C. She is an evolutionary biologist who for the last 30 years has been studying the anatomy, evolution and systematics of fossil and living marine mammals, especially pinnipeds and whales. She is a past President of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology and former Senior Editor of the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology and Associate Editor of Marine Mammal Science. She has written 100 scientific papers and several books for the specialist as well as non-scientist including Return to the Sea: The Life and Evolutionary Times of Marine Mammals, 2012, (University of California Press) and the forthcoming book (summer, 2015) Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises: a natural history and species guide (University of Chicago Press).

James Sumich is Professor Emeritus of Biology at Grossmont College and is the author of a popular book on gray whales. He has conducted research on gray whales from British Columbia to Baja California for four decades and has taught marine mammal course for nearly that long. His research has focused on the ecological physiology of baleen whales, especially the energetics of their seasonal fasting migrations.

Kit M. Kovacs is the Biodiversity Research Programme Leader for the Norwegian Polar Institute in Troms� Norway and Professor of Biology at University Studies on Svalbard (UNIS). She has worked with marine mammals in polar regions for the past 30 years, focussing on behavioural ecology and population biology. She is a Past-President of the Society for Marine Mammalogy and the current Chair of the Pinniped Specialist Group, International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
