Unintended Consequences

This is an interesting book. I haven't finished it yet but the earlier sections give a good overview of how French and British colonialism in North Africa and the Middle East set things in motion in the Arab world that have led to what we have today. I feel sure that the French and British politicians of the late eigthteenth and the nineteenth centuries had no idea of the unintended consequences they would cause.

About the Author
Tim Gorman began his information technology career in 1984 as a C programmer on UNIX and VMS systems, working on medical and financial systems as an application developer, systems programmer, and systems administrator. He joined Oracle Corporation in 1990 as a consultant, then became an independent consultant in 1998, and has worked for SageLogix since 2000. Gorman is the coauthor of Essential Oracle8i Data Warehousing and Oracle8 Data Warehousing. He specializes in performance tuning applications, databases, and systems, as well as data warehouse design and implementation, backup and recovery, architecture and infrastructure, and database administration. Gorman still considers himself a pretty good coder, although the market for C programs has dried up somewhat lately.

Really good introduction to using Oracle's dialect of SQL language

First of all - I've received this as a review title from Apress, but following review is my personal opinion.

"Beginning Oracle SQL for Oracle Database 12c" is one of the best books about SQL programming in Oracle Database I've read. Authors did a really good job teaching this really wide topic. Everything is clear, there's a lot of examples for each of the feature that is mentioned in the book.
Although it is targeted as a book for beginners, also more experienced programmers can learn (or refresh their knowledge) using this book. Especially when they haven't used Oracle Database 12c features yet.

This book starts with an introduction to information systems, databases and database management systems. There is also a description of relational model along with 12 Codd's rules which describe requirements, RDBMS system should follow. You'll find there also an information about relational operators.
Next chapter contains an overview of SQL language. You'll learn the difference between data definition and data manipulation statements, about privileges and a difference between system and object ones. Chapter 2 provides also an introduction to SQL Developer (SQL*Plus is also covered in this book, but in chapter 11, which covers also some scripting using this tool).
After this introduction we move along to basics of data definition, which is then continued in more detail in Chapter 7. Chapter 3 provides enough information to get started - teaches what is a schema, what are built-in datatypes that can be used in table definition and how to create a table. Chapter 7 which goes into more details about this topic, teaches about modifying table structure, clearing all the data and droping the tables. You will find also what are indexes and how to use them. Sequences and synonyms are covered in this chapter too.
Chapter 4 and 5 cover data retrieval from single table. Chapter 4 teaches you the basics of SELECT statement, about projection and restriction operators. You'll find there also a nice description about what are NULL values, about what's so special about them and how they differ from other values you can find in the database. Chapter 5 provides information about functions and how and where you can use them in your statements.
Chapter 6 provides many information about INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE and MERGE commands. You'll learn also what is a transaction and how Oracle Database processes them and how it provides you consistent data.
Chapters 8 and 9 go into more detail about data retrieval - you'll learn how to join tables to retrieve the data you want, what are inner joins and what are outer joins. Chapter 9 goes further and provides information about subqueries, hierarchical queries, analytic functions and flashback queries.
In chapter 10 there are informations about views and the difference between inline, standard and materialized views. You will even learn how to manipulate data using views and why it is sometimes more convenient solution.
The last chapter covering SQL language is chapter 12 in which you can read about collections and objects in SQL - how to define them and how to use them.

Each chapter covering SQL language features ends with exercises helping you to understand better the topics that were covered. At the end of the book, you can find solutions to this exercises.
Also, when there is an new command introduced, it is briefly described and you will find a nice diagram, on which you can find the syntax. After that there's an example of how to use this command, so everything is explained really clearly. You can also find an information about common problems and mistakes you can make - the description of differences WHERE and HAVING clauses deserves special notice.
The only thing I missed was at least an overview of XMLType.

If you would like to start programming Oracle's dialect of SQL language, I think this is the book to start from. If you are more experienced, the book is still worth reading - you may find some interesting informations, especially some features that were inroduced in Oracle Database 12c.

Very easy to read. A lot of examples to follow and the reasons why you should do things the way they say. A little out of date at this point as the software has had quite a few updates since the book was written and published. So, somethings you may have to look up.

Great, but then a huge hole in the directions are missing

Very frustrating book. The intro chapters are great. But then they refer you to the downloadable database examples and there are absolutely no directions for how you get those script examples into a usable and interactive database. This book holds your hand perfectly through the beginning chapters and even explains how to make a desktop shortcut to a software application, but the rest of the book is based on a sample database of which the supposed scripts are provided, but there are no indications about what to do with them and how that becomes a database. It is impossible to continue without these directions for a beginner, such as myself. I guess I need to find another book as I've reached a huge road block. How can I learn about a database when I can't even get that far.

The opening Pharmacy focuses on terse, dry junior high-school teacher Olive Kitteridge and her gregarious pharmacist husband, Henry, both of whom have survived the loss of a psychologically damaged parent, and both of whom suffer painful attractions to co-workers. Their son, Christopher, takes center stage in A Little Burst, which describes his wedding in humorous, somewhat disturbing detail, and in Security, where Olive, in her 70s, visits Christopher and his family in New York. Strout's fiction showcases her ability to reveal through familiar details—the mother-of-the-groom's wedding dress, a grandmother's disapproving observations of how her grandchildren are raised—the seeds of tragedy. Themes of suicide, depression, bad communication, aging and love, run through these stories, none more vivid or touching than Incoming Tide, where Olive chats with former student Kevin Coulson as they watch waitress Patty Howe by the seashore, all three struggling with their own misgivings about life. Like this story, the collection is easy to read and impossible to forget. Its literary craft and emotional power will surprise readers unfamiliar with Strout. (Apr.)

A Beautiful and Enriching Novel

At over 1,500 reviews, I know my review won't make a difference, but I just wrote a negative review, so I felt the need to balance things out. I'll make this brief.

This is one of the most outstanding novels I've ever read. I normally don't reread books, but this one will be the exception. Stout tells small stories about small people, in a small town, but none of this is small, because Stout reveals that all of our stories--and yes this is an every person type of book, are beautiful. Stout's empathetic authorial voice is beautiful. Beautiful is a word I use over and over describing this book. Her use of language is heart bracingly beautiful to the point where sometimes I had to put the book down just to absorb the profound pathos she describes.

I promised a short review, so I will conclude by saying my life has been enriched by reading this novel.

"Olive Kitteridge" is about life everywhere. . .

Why do people read books? as escapism from one's life? to be inspired by what one learns by reading to live a better life? Olive Kitteridge is a book about a woman who is true to herself, despite her family's past, despite her own blunt personality and despite being married to a man she is not happy with although she knows he loves her despite herself.

There are thirteen stories in which the character, Olive Kitteridge, appears. They are not all about her. But in each one, a facet of who she is is revealed. The book spans over twenty-five years so that the reader can see what happens to the awkward youth in junior school who grow up to get married, divorced and to think about life's meaning themselves. Olive is not easy on those she loves and they hardly feel the commitment and loyalty she has towards them because of the manner in which she snaps at or criticizes them. She is quick to retort and slow to apologize (only once in their marriage.) You might not like her but all of us knows someone like her. Moreover, many of us are like parts of her.

The richness and depth of this character and the sublime ways by which her truest, deepest feelings are revealed make me appreciate how complex people and life are in my own family and the town we live in. Although the stories are set in a small town in Maine, I can see people's behavior so similar to them paralleled in the working-class town I live in here in Central Massachusetts. The poignancy is striking because there seem to be no places on earth where family weaknesses and unrequited yearning do not exist side by side.

It's no wonder that this book was awarded the Pulitzer Prize.

The long way home

I think this book is unusual and sophisticated in the characters and the way in which the stories are told. It is also very well written. The reason for my lukewarm response is simply that I found it something of a depressing slog. I know the old saw "life is hard and then you die," but this was a slow death indeed. Insights and bright moments of connection along the way, to be sure, but for me, extremely oppressive. Like writing about "boredom" by being incredibly boring. It works, it's true, but it's a pretty unpleasant experience.

29 pages and half are photos not drawings and half the drawings are black and white. And it's a real shame the artist has talent and true will inspiration here. It maybe his work has called up the very demons he sought to render.........anyway I hope he recovers to put more time into the next installment.

The artwork is great and colorfully vibrant. The only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars is it was too short for it's file size. Other than that, I would love to have some of the artwork for my walls. Brilliant work.

About the Author

Bill Sapsis has been involved in the entertainment industry for over 40 years. In 1981 he started Sapsis Rigging, Inc. and developed the company into an internationally recognized leader in the design and installation of stage equipment. He is a current member of the ETCP Council and Chair of the Rigging Working Group for PLASA NA. He also sits on the PLASA Foundation's Board of Directors and is a member of the Behind The Scenes committee. He is the recipient of the 2010 EVA Swan Award, PLASA NA's highest honor. This is a compilation of excerpted info from several books and not a comprehensive overview of entertainment rigging. Tho some of the info seems dated, by & large, rigging techniques have not changed dramatically, so this is still viable. Reading this book will NOT make you a "rigger".

Essential reading for anyone interested in India

Anyone interested in Indian culture or history or social justice issues should read this book. It is a rare glimpse into that other history of India, the one that everybody knows is there and nobody wants to talk about.

Omprakash Valmiki grew up in Northern India in the decades just after Indian Independence, and in this book he sets forth a collection of scenes from his life. He begins as the son of a desperately poor family from the lowest caste in Indian society, a community of illiterate Untouchables, who fights to gain an education and becomes, today, a respected playwright. His tells of the torments he suffered along the way (and occasionally still suffers), as well as of his political awakening and the development of his consciousness and morale. He describes, by example, how India's thousands-year-old system of institutionalized slavery has actually worked on the ground and upon the lives of real people, how it manifests its power over their hearts, minds, and stomachs. He gives us an anatomy of oppression.

But while the darkness that pulled Valmiki down is relentlessly bleak, his life-story is stunning. That a person could pull himself up from such poverty, such abject powerlessness, to advance himself in the world and become recognized as a writer and an empowered voice, working on behalf of Dalits, is nothing less than amazing. His is one of those inspired lives, the kind we want to hear about to remind ourselves how much adversity the human mind and spirit are able to overcome, to remember that we can thrive despite all.

While Valmiki's prose doesn't entirely conform to the modern Western literary sensibility, the content of his account is breathtakingly honest and brave. We are reminded in the foreword that the highest purpose of Dalit writing is not beauty of craft, but authenticity of experience. And as we put together the realities of his life, we come to understand why.

Most significantly, though, Valmiki's story is a voice from the half of India that has been voiceless for countless generations. In the latter decades of the 20th century, Valmiki and a few others like him have breached an opening for our understanding and knowledge about a people so marginalized that they disappeared from the world's awareness, their cultures, lifestyles, folk knowledge, and aspirations represented nowhere in mainstream or scholarly sources. For thousands of years, the oppressed of India had only been spoken about and spoken for by outsiders lacking any real knowledge of their lives--indeed, usually by those with a vested interest in preserving the status quo, with its imbalance of power against the Dalits.

Even today, most Dalit writing is unavailable to the English-speaking world because Dalits usually write in Hindi or another indigenous Indian language. "Joothan" was translated from Hindi by Arun Prabha Mukherjee, a professor of English at York University in Canada. In making this work available to a wider audience, and in illuminating the book with her thoughtful and insightful foreword, which provides historical, cultural, and literary context, she has done the world a great service.

Very interesting biography of a Dalit writer and the caste system which continues to strangle India's ability to move into a major power. This along with endemic corruption keeps India mired in poverty and prevents them from taping the creative power of the millions of uneducated.
I look at America and the way we have still not risen above the social and cultural problems created by the hundreds of year of slavery. I cannot even imagine the difficulties faced by those who have suffered under a similar system for a thousand years. Institutionally the caste system is similar to slavery. In a post reconstruction world black employees in households had to bring their own plates and utensiles or use set aside dishes, not to pollute the things of their employers, could not use the same toilets or drinking fountains: totally incongruous with using a black woman as a wet nurse at the same time feeling if she drank from one of your glasses that she polluted it.
But all prejudice is based on wrong thinking and almost schizophrenic application of social norms: it is culturally acceptable to have any contact that is beneficial to the oppressor, but not acceptable to have less intimate contacts, as these allow the person who feels superior to humiliate.
The most painful line in this book was in the introduction, "daughters of merchant and priests washed their eyes after having accidentally seen a 'chandala' because he was unfit to be seen." Any system that so emphatically denies the very acknowledgement of another's very existence is reprehensible.
It did introduce me to the writer and activist Amkbedkar, who has received little recognition. This is an important book that will broaden you knowledge of some of the internal strifes within India that seem so incomprehensible to those of us who know so little of her history.

Well laid out for quick access to important information. Treatment section is great, with numerous options in a easy to read manner. Only complaint is that there is no mention of diabetic ketoacidosis.

Not very helpful. I find that a lot of common emergencies are not included, like IVDD and vestibular disease, etc.
