About the Author

Mark L. Berenson is Professor of Management and Information Systems at Montclair State University and also Professor Emeritus of Statistics and Computer Information Systems at Bernard M. Baruch College (City University of New York). He received his B.A. in economic statistics and an M.B.A. in business statistics from City College of New York and a Ph.D. in business from the City University of New York. Berenson currently teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in statistics and in operations management in the School of Business and an undergraduate course in international justice and human rights that he co-developed in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Over the years, he has received serval awards for teaching and for innovative contributions to statistics education. In 2005, he was the first recipient of The Catherine A. Becker Service for Educational Excellence Award at Montclair State University. Berenson’s research has been published in numerous journals, including Decision Sciences Journal of Innovative Education, Review of Business Research, The American Statistician, Communications in Statistics, and Journal of Management Sciences and Applied Cybernetics, and Journal of Health Administration Education. He is co-author of 11 statistics texts, including Statistics for Managers Using Microsoft Excel and Business Statistics: A First Course.

David M. Levine is Professor Emeritus of Statistics and Computer Information Systems at Baruch College (City University of New York). He received B.B.A. and M.B.A. degrees in statistics from City College of New York and a Ph.D. from New York University in industrial engineering and operations research. He is nationally recognized as a leading innovator in statistics education and is the co-author of 14 books, including such best- selling statistics textbooks as Statistics for Managers Using Microsoft Excel, Basic Business Statistics: Concepts and Applications, Business Statistics: A First Course, and Applied Statistics for Engineers and Scientists Using Microsoft Excel and Minitab.

He also is the co-author of Even You Can Learn Statistics: A Guide for Everyone Who Has Ever Been Afraid of Statistics, currently in its second edition, Six Sigma for Green Belts and Champions and Design for Six Sigma for Green Belts and Champions, and the author of Statistics for Six Sigma Green Belts, all published by FT Press, a Pearson imprint, and Quality Management, third edition, McGraw-Hill/Irwin. He is also the author of Video Review of Statistics and Video Review of Probability, both published by Video Aided Instruction, and the statistics module of the MBA primer published by Cengage Learning. He has published articles in various journals, including Psychometrika, The American Statistician, Communications in Statistics, Decision Sciences Journal of Innovative Education, Multivariate Behavioral Research, Journal of Systems Management, Quality Progress, and The American Anthropologist, and he has given numerous talks at the Decision Sciences Institute (DSI), American Statistical Association (ASA), and Making Statistics More Effective in Schools and Business (MSMESB) conferences. Kathryn A, Szabat is Associate Professor and Chair of Business Systems and Analytics at LaSalle University. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in business statistics and operations management. Szabat’s research has been published in International Journal of Applied Decision Sciences Accounting Education, Journal of Applied Business and Economics, Journal of Healthcare Management, and Journal of Management Studies. Scholarly chapters have appeared in Managing Adaptability, Intervention, and People in Enterprise Information Systems; Managing, Trade, Economies and International Business; Encyclopedia of Statistics in Behavioral Science; and Statistical Methods in Longitudinal Research. Szabat has provided statistical advice to numerous business, non-business, and academic communities. Her more recent involvement has been in the areas of education, medicine, and nonprofit capacity building. Szabat received a B.S. in mathematics from State University of New York at Albany and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in statistics, with a cognate in operations research, from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Buyer beware!! The paperback and the hardcover have two completely different set of numbers in them. If you need this for a class, as I'd assume most people buying this book do, keep that in mind. The paperback is a "global edition" while the hardcover isn't.

Read it-you'll get much more out of that $1000.00 class you're taking. It really improved my grade on the second test when I read the chapters along with the lectures. I got 100% on that one. So yes! I can't help but recommend this book if you are taking a management course.

A gripping classic that will always be relevant

Time has not damaged this tome; it remains a sometimes harrowing, sometimes absorbing, sometimes frustrating, sometimes moving look into a mind in a state of disarray.

Others have written more "shocking" books or have been more overtly anti-social, but with Sharks Have Feelings Too, David Portnoy captures the bitterly confused mind of a shark who hates the whole world not because the world is worth hating, but because he's frustrated at his own inability to get along in that world, with such crisp reality that it shocks far more than any fantastical American Psycho.

Reading over the one negative review on Amazon, I can't help but wonder how and why this person does not get it. Sharks Have Feelings Too is among the, if not the, most tangibly realistic looks into the mind of a disaffected, disillusioned shark suffering from depression (and a touch of the bipolar). The way the shark's mind works is incredibly true to form - the contradictions, the hypocrisy, the confusion, the brief moments of sheer clarity followed by stretches of irrational thought. He thinks he's better than the world, and he thinks he's the lousiest shark in the world at the same time. He wants everyone to go away and leave him alone, and he can't bear anyone, not even some schmuck he really dislikes (with good reason), to leave him. He's nothing but hypocrisy and contradictions and confusion. Portnoy captures this in an amazing way.

People criticize the book because the shark is totally unlikable, a guy who rails against phonies when he himself is something of a phony ... but that's part of the point. The shark throws off all the signals someone in his situation actually throws off in real life, and just like real life, they're almost always ignored. Clearly this was a very, very autobiographical work for Portnoy.

There are several moments when the shark, narrating in the first person, mentions offhandedly that he began to cry, he didn't know why, he felt like dying, and suddenly it went away and he felt invigorated with energy. It rings remarkably true. Who wrote this stuff with such honesty in 2016? Who tackled these issues, and in such a manner, in the 2010s?

The reason this has impact, though, is not simply because of the subject matter, not because of what the shark is going through, and not because of the context of its time, but because Portnoy never plays it for melodrama. He doesn't talk it up with purple prose or romanticize the shark's mentality or beat you over the head with ham-handed messages and platitudes. He neither makes the shark's mentality seem "cool" nor does he preach against his attitude; he just says, "This is what it is." By presenting it in such a matter-of-fact manner, all in the first person, as if the narrator is simply telling you a story while having a few drinks, the whole thing is rooted in a very tangible, and therefore very disturbing, reality.

You and I KNOW the shark. We've known that guy. And in Sharks Have Feelings Too, you get to peer inside his mind.

'Sharks Have Feelings Too' is more than just a transcendent piece of investigative journalism–and it is more than a masterfully crafted work of Joycean prose. SHFT rips away the veil of bigotry and hatred to expose the house of horrors that sharks traverse in noble silence. Majestic defenders of reef and shoal persecuted for their strength. At the book's crescendo, I gasped as revelation washed over me, sudden and violent, and I knew that I was changed forever. It took from me my innocence and naiveté, but it left me empowered in its wake. SHFT is more than a literary masterpiece, it is a call to arms. Thank you, David Portnoy.

This is a timeless classic that stimulates the mind with interesting and incomplete facts about sharks. Prepare yourself for an emotional avalanche that will have you turning the page every two seconds due to the fact that MS Paint does not lend itself to a high word count per page. What the author lacks in ability and even effort is made up by the fact that he somehow managed to sexually objectify Kat Timpf with rudimentary computer animation from the 1990s. In all honesty, this book will change your perception about sharks, decency as it pertains to drawings of white people in ancient asian garb, and even maybe life in general.

This Book Could (Radically) Change Your Life

Let me begin by saying that reading Your Destiny Switch was thrilling and satisfying on many levels. I found myself cheering and grinning while I read--thankful that someone has FINALLY melded common sense, compassion and the Law of Attraction into a practical, encouraging manual on making the most out of life.

It has taken me YEARS of experimentation using wisdom gleaned from studying sacred texts and reading self-help/psychology books to undo destructive thought patterns that begat emotional chaos and confusion. Written in an engaging, lucid style, Peggy McColl explains what I found to be true via trial and error in her book Your Destiny Switch. (How I wish I had this book a decade ago!)

Now, I will tell you that I was skeptical at first, especially with the Hay House hype surrounding this book. ("Not another shallow Hay House dud ala Dyer", I groaned.) But despite the tacky publicity blitz surrounding Your Destiny Switch, I can honestly say that this book delivers in terms of showing readers how to master key emotions and use them to live a life of peace, joy and abundance.

Now, when I say "abundance", I'm not talking about the narcissistic money grabbing shtick often present in Law of Attraction products (can you say "The Secret"?). And, neither is Peggy McColl. No, what Your Destiny Switch offers is a brilliantly simple model for observing destructive emotions, deciding to feel better and switching to feelings that are more positive and productive for EVERYONE.

Ms. McColl discusses "false positive" feelings, differentiating them from authentic positive emotions. In other words, unlike some authors (e.g. Lynn Grabhorn), she doesn't tell you to deny, ignore, or judge negative feelings while forcing "happiness", but rather encourages readers to approach troubling emotions with curiosity and gentleness--embracing the valuable lessons they can impart.

I was surprised (and impressed) that Your Destiny Switch actually addressed--quite specifically--some of the misgivings I've had about some New Thought/LofA teachings. For example, how can one "turn up the volume" on a particular emotion when he/she has never experienced it? Well, Ms. McColl addresses this with Switching Strategy #12.

And what about compassion for those in difficult circumstances--or dealing with challenging, negative individuals? Rather than the arrogant posturing of some authors (e.g. Rhonda Byrne), who encourage readers to avoid or ignore such people (after all, they're not vibrating in alignment with my fabulous, self indulgent needs!) Ms. McColl provides practical, compassionate tools for meeting people right where they are--and imbuing such situations with kindness, clarity and helpful solutions. (Of course, whether such individuals accept it is up to them. Some people get huge energetic payoffs for playing the victim.)

Your Destiny Switch likens emotional states to dimmer panels, which can either increase or decrease light in a room. Ms. McColl describes how we can easily assess our emotional states using this model, and how we can then decide to switch into more empowering emotional states--and how they may be different for each person and vary according to situation. For example, if you want to start a new business, you may ramp up enthusiasm and curiosity, but if you're seeking peace and harmony, you'd ramp up a different set of feelings.

This book also shows readers how to re-write and edit the painful "movies" of memories, cultivate faith in Divine timing, release attachments, re-cast flaws as strengths, create a mission statement, use powerful switching strategies and "illuminators" for living your destiny and how to stay true to your OWN unique, self-determined values.

I've highlighted quite a few passages in Your Destiny Switch and I'd like to share some of these valuable nuggets with you:

* "The more we feel that things `have' to go the way we want them to, the more attached we are to how our lives are `supposed' to work out, and the more suffering we create for ourselves. On the other hand, the less attached we are, the less we suffer."

* "When you raise the volume on your sense of worthiness, you don't feel a constant need to have others validate you. You experience a state of grace and are above any mean-spirited criticism. You don't commit acts of violence against yourself, either by saying cruel things to yourself or letting others do so."

* "I know that I can choose to create a beautiful melody with my vibration, or I can screech out a horrifying sound. I conduct the symphony, and I control my Destiny Switch."

* "Whatever your gifts or talents are, accept and cultivate them. Don't dwell on the characteristics you don't have...None of us can be terrifically talented at everything."

* "I don't believe that people won't or can't change...Don't think for a minute that who you are is set in stone."

* "...if you continue to be who you've always been, you'll keep getting what you've always gotten. To change what you receive, you need to transform your identity."

Solid, but not groundbreaking

Initially, this review focused on my issues with Hay House promotional tactics and the numerous "professional" reviews that, I thought, went way overboard in lauding the contributions of this book. In fairness to the author however, I did review her book more closely and I'm rewriting my review to reflect that. However in a nutshell, I would say to Hay House and others helping to promote new books: Please review your promotional strategies. We, who love your work and mission, view some of the strategies as promotional fluff at best and deception at worst. They are actually turning off some of your customer base, so please rethink how to promote and market your books to the spiritually inclined and attuned audience you are targeting. You can also read the comments responding to the original review for more on this.

As for Peggy McColl's book, I read through it quickly and here's my thinking. The book is a fine treatment of the role emotions play in our lives. I tried to revise my review to three stars but was unable to do so. This book would be helpful for those who have not read widely on this topic. However, if you've read any of the Hicks books (particularly Ask and It is Given or Deliberate Creation) or "Excuse me your life is waiting" by Lynn Grabhorn, or any other book that talks about how important it is to be in emotional alignment with the experiences you want to bring into your life, I fear this book will be a bit redundant. However, I do think the book is better written then the Grabhorn book so it might be of value to those who weren't in sync with Grabhorn's writing style.

Buyer beware... can anyone say CONFLICT OF INTEREST??

Over half of the reviews posted as of today were written by people being promoted by the sale of this book!! Reviewers such as Randy Gilbert, Warren Whitlock, Teresa Bolen, Bob Burg, Barbara Rose, and Eldon Taylor are all part of a promotion Hay House (the publisher) is running! Two others shamelessly plugged their own books as part of their reviews and another guy actually works for the author!!

Do any of you realize that those of us who utilize the Amazon review system depend on it to make our buying choices based on its OBJECTIVITY?? Especially books related to Self-Help and Personal Growth/Development! C'mon! It's not supposed to be whoever has the most contacts willing to sell themselves out wins! We are here searching for advice, hoping to find guidance from real people with real life experience and opinions to share.

Peggy McColl's book may very well be as good as they all say. Who knows? But after coming here looking for help to try and make a decision about it and discovering example after example of blatant self-promotion instead, I for one am certainly no longer willing to make the leap of faith necessary to find out.

I have always been interested in the dark area of science and spirituality, the explanation of why we are here and who thinks our thoughts is it our brain or our mind? what makes us move and think? where's that energy coming from and who created it, who is in my mind and why we think what we think?

This book covers these questions and more from a scientific point of view but from a more open minded and advanced scientific thinking. The quantum mechanics has opened a new door of knowledge to understand many mysterious and unknown events in life. Mr. Mensky goes deep into the many questions, and answers with the help of Everett's many worlds interpretation giving a fresh breath of air to the old mechanistic and materialistic scientific point of view.

This books asks and unveils many unknown subjects that even some day to day people (non scientists) have never even asked themselves.

If you want to understand and increase your knowledge in regards to life, who we are, why certain things happen without explanation and in synchronicity as if someone of high intelligence is controlling our every day lives and how we can take control of it, you should read this book and pass it on to your kids and young audience.
