An Excellent Choice

This book is an edited collection of papers that survey the major topics in health economics. Despite is origin, the papers are all of high quality and are readable for anyone with a background in intermediate microeconomics. The contributions by Berndt/Donohue (on direct-to-consumer advertising), Cawley (on addictive behavior), and McGuire (on physician fees) are particularly good.
I recommend this book highly as a quick overview of current thinking in health economics.

Finally, in 1972, thanks in large part to the investigative work of the author of this book, Bormann's remains were discovered and identified in Berlin, where he had killed himself shortly after Hitler's death. This book is the story not only of the dramatic discovery of Bormann's remains but of the man himself--the almost incredible story of a not very talented, totally unimaginative, dedicated, ruthless, crafty and tireless bureaucrat who skillfully played on Hitler's weaknesses until he had made himself the most powerful man in Germany next to Hitler himself, the man through whom all the other Nazi elite--Goebbels, Goring, Speer, Ribbontrop, Schirach--had to approach the Fuhrer. It is perhaps the most devastating picture yet of the arbitrariness and disorganization of the Third Reich. Even more important, it is a chilling case history of how a desire for power and a will to succeed can, if all other considerations are put aside, carry a man to the top. It is impossible to conclude after reading it that another Bormann could not rise in almost the same way in another country today.

Exceptionally detailed picture of how the Reich worked

One of the more interesting behind-the-scenes analyses of exactly how things worked in Nazi Germany, from Hitler's Weimar rise to the last days in the bunker.

Most people don't realize how much influence this little-known bureaucrat had, especially in the last few years when he had gathered an amazing amount of influence & power, cleverly easing rivals aside and playing the major Nazi leaders off against each other. At the end, he had near-total control over access to der Fuhrer and was arguably the most powerful man in Germany after Hitler. Truly a remarkable achievement for a bureaucratic little weasel that few Germans had ever heard of, and whose name was rarely even mentioned in newspapers.

A fascinating book, thoroughly researched, that also gives a lot of insight into all the Nazi leadership and how they worked with -- but usually against -- each other. I read it once, and immediately began re-reading it.

In reading Konrad Heiden's massive 'Der Fuhrer,' I felt that I had finally gotten a real grasp of Hitler's bizarre animus and understood how much brilliance it took to have finagled his way through the Weimar political minefield and actually steal the leadership. Now, with this biography of Bormann's political life, I believe I understand Bormann's rather amazing talents for plotting and gathering power unto himself while gently -- sometimes -- elbowing all others aside.

Just as Hitler was in many ways the consummate self-taught political genius of his era, Bormann was one of the most effective self-taught bureaucratic manipulators in history, at the end being perhaps the only one Hitler really trusted. The two were made for each other.

This book is, I believe, essential to understanding the Third Reich and how it worked.

Inspirational, informative, thorough!

I had purchased this book a few years back in hopes of finding an "easy fix" for my chronic psorasis. I guess, at the time, I was not ready for extensive information easily "reminded" and provided to me on many more subjects. About three months ago I re-discovered the book amongst others in my attic. Once I begun reading from the beginning I could not put it down! Summer Rain's accounts of the visionary No Eyes were so touching and real. Has there been a time in your life when you were sitting quitely in the woods, amongst the stars and feel the wind calling? Did you feel safe, as if your finally "home"? If you've ever wondered why you love fresh veggies from your own garden or thoroughly enjoy long serene walks of solitude in the winderness then THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU! While speeding our man made information super highway of technology, we have taken for granted the enormous world that still exists. We've grown so accustom to our electronic accomidations that we forget to embrace the beauty of natural simplicty. The "real time" connections we make should not be exclusively fiber optic but more importantly with our senses and each other, right? In other words, take time to smell the roses and while your there, read this book. You won't be disappointed!

This is my favorite reference book!

This is a great book to start out with if you're just getting into natural living or starting along the Red Road and want to learn more on how to do it or if you know a little about it and want to learn still more. Mary's smooth narraitive on No-Eye's lessons keeps you interested throughout the entire book. From front to back it's inclusive in knowledge, technique and wisdom. I've indexed my copy of this book with tabs on much used pages and carry it with me everywhere for quick reference. I use the dream interpretation section when I wake up. It goes grocery shopping with me. When friends and family call on me with emotional or physical problems, it's always there as reference to speed their healing... Folks, I could go on and on about this book, but I think you get the idea. Just get the book!

Possibly the ultimate niche book, good if the topic interests you, otherwise a crashing bore.

This may be close to the ultimate niche book, about the arms trade in the Indian Ocean in the 19th century (the author refers to the "long" century, 1789-1914 or so), This means largely European manufactured weapons to countries and entities in the general area (the term "country" does not really apply to all of them). Chew sees the periphery as not simply an area of victims of European trade, as some histories do, but as having considerable freedom of action, sometimes against the interests of the arms sellers, including the Ethiopians and the Afghans.

Most interesting to me is the trade to the Sulu area, and Burma. The scale of the trade was large, and Chew observes than the Europeans did not achieve definite arms superiority until the later 1800s.

Difficult book to study for the exam.

This is Not an easy book to study for the test. It is like reading a text book that will put you to sleep. I have seen and compared to other self-study review books and this one gets an F. The format is written in a text book style. if the writers could at least incorporate breaks in between subjects with examples or key words or charts it would make following key parts to study for the exam easier to understand.

This text is very hard to read. It is filled with one run-on sentence after another. There seem to be no examples to help the reader understand the cpmplex rules presented. It may be more helpful if you have already covered the text before and only need a refresher.
