Highly recommended

I really do like this book. It's quite small but covers a lot on Java 8 Lambdas, Interfaces, Functions, Streams and Parallel processing. I like that the author explains these features simply and concisely, covering how to use each as well as why they are used and the benefits of each. There are plenty of code examples to aid understanding. I do think the prose could be improved though to flow better. I would have knocked off a half star if I could have but this didn't warrant a full star off. It's a good book to get up to speed quickly and I highly recommend it.

Good book written in easy language to understand

As the author mentioned, this book is for you if you have to get quick overview of Lambda Expressions in Java 8 over the weekend. You have to be an experienced Java developer to understand the concepts. This book has examples and snippets of code that would give an overview of changes to Java 8 APIs due to introduction of Lambdas. It also gives an exposure to functional programming. I recommended the book to Java developers who work for me to read so that they can be up to date with the changes in Java 8.

INFORMATIVE AND VALUABLE LITTLE BOOK ADDRESSING A VERY DIFFICULT SUBJECT

Well let me start this review by stating that the absolute last thing I would have wished for is to be forced into a conversation with one of my children or grandchildren over the subject of masturbation. I would rather have chewed in tinfoil or eaten ground glass. Fortunately for me, I never was forced into a corner in this area. But that being said, had I been put on the spot, I certainly would have given a great amount of money to have had this book available to guide me through a very difficult conversation.

The author has touched here on a subject that is still rather a taboo in our society; more so it seems for girls...I assume this as to be honest, I have not had a conversation with a girl or woman about masturbation since....well, come to think of it, I am not sure I ever have had one! My daughter is a grown woman with older children and all of my grandchildren are boys, so my chances of having one are, i.e. a conversation such as this, are nil. Be that as it may...

This is a very well written work. It involves a little girl who is embarrassed that she and her friend were caught by her friend's mom doing something that "felt good and tickled" in the neighbors pool (water jets on the side of the pool). The little girl was pretty devastated because the friend's mom had yelled at her. The mother of our little girl begins talking and then takes the little girl shopping and the conversation between the two continues. Thus the author is able to share the information needed through this conversational vehicle.

Much is discussed here. What masturbation is, why it feels good, who does it (it seems like just about every one), where and when it is appropriate, masturbation hygiene, the fact that it is not a subject for general conversation with friends, the fact that guilt should not be associated with the act and so on.

This is certainly not a "how to do it" book. No, this is a frank, sometimes amusing, discussion between a mother and daughter discussing some of the facts of life. This is good information.

The author has a keen and readable writing style laced with a good sense of appropriate humor. While the discussion he records is light, the facts he shares are quite serious and informative. The book is laced with many cute illustrations which correspond well with the text.

Fortunately for me, I have never had to have this conversation. But I must say that if I had had to, then I would have been extremely grateful for this book. Of course had this subject come up with my daughter, I would have, in my case, sent her and the book straight to my wife and let her worry about it...hey, I am that kind of guy.

One of the nice things about this work is that if you are like me and would go to great lengths not to have this conversation, then you can "accidently" leave it lying around the house. I promise you that no young lady of the target age of this work will be able to read the title of the book and pass it up. Reading it would be almost as useful as discussing it.

This particular work covers the subject of masturbation for boys. The author has also written one for boys entitled Everybody Masturbates

Like all such books though, each parent must make up their own mind and this work should be reviewed by the parent first...hey, that is your job!

Cristian YoungMiller and the Ladies

Not to leave a stone unturned in his quest of sex education, Cristian YoungMiller has written a companion book for girls based on his book EVERYBODY MASTURBATES that was written for boys. The style is the same, the use of plain storytelling with illustrations is the same, and the message is the same: masturbation is a normal activity for both boys/men and girls/women.

This time the 10-year-old girl is Candy ad Candy feels guilty because her friend Molly's mother 'caught' the girls standing in the swimming pool with the water jets tickling them in just the right place. Candy is unable to relate her fear to her mother until her mother very wisely takes her shopping. Alone, the mother and daughter discuss masturbation, what it is, why it is, how it is not unhealthy, that it is meant to lead to eventual preparation for the concept of having babies, the does and don'ts of hygiene, and finally the ultimate question: if it is alright for girls to masturbate, do women who are married or simply grown up masturbate, too? Candy's mother struggles a bit with the sensitivity of the subject but in the end she reassures in a demonstration of how shoes feel or look as to the importance of how females need to know what makes them feel good. It works, and Candy is relieved (as is her mother) and the topic of self-pleasuring is well covered.

Simple book? No. It is a complex situation that YoungMiller addresses but he is so creative and gifted that he makes the 'taboo' subject a rich learning experience. A job very well done. Grady Harp, October 10

What a great guide for parents! I wish I had this book back when my daughter was seven. It is a sweet, thoughtful, and respectful story. Easy enough reading for a young girl and and excellent guide for parents on how to approach this hard to talk about subject with them. Highly recommend!

Excellent book on all aspects of power electronics

Power electronics is the technology associated with the efficient conversion, control and conditioning of electric power by static means from its available input form into the desired electrical output form. This conversion is performed with semiconductor switching devices such as diodes, thyristors and transistors. In contrast to electronic systems concerned with transmission and processing of signals and data, in power electronics substantial amounts of electrical energy are processed. The authors at MIT designed this text specifically to teach the subject of power electronics. Although the coverage is broad, they develop topics in sufficient depth to expose the fundamental principles, concepts, techniques, methods, and circuits necessary for the reader to understand and design power electronic systems as diverse as a 5 Watt switching converter and a 600 MWatt high-voltage DC transmission terminal. Topics include an introduction, form and function (topology), introduction to rectifier circuits, bridge and polyphase rectifier circuits, phase-controlled converters, high-frequency switching dc/dc converters, isolated high-frequency dc/dc converters, variable-frequency dc/ac converters, resonant converters, ac/ac converters, dynamics and control, state-space models, linear and piecewise linear models, feedback control design, components, review of semiconductor devices, power diodes, power transistors, thyristors, magnetic components, ancillary issues, gate and base drives, thyristor commutation circuits, snubber circuits and clamps, and thermal modeling and heat sinking. There are plenty of instructive diagrams shown throughout the book, and the only thing I can really say against it is that part two of the book entitled "Dynamics and Control" seems out of place in this book, since it really has nothing much to do with the subject of power electronics and seems to disrupt the flow of what is otherwise an excellent book. Also, it is very hard to cover the subject of dynamics and control adequately in just the four chapters allocated to the subject.

Comprehensive and lucid... this book presents all of the most important subjects in modern power electronics and electric power system control, and presents them in an organized fashion with a readable format. It also touches on many emerging concepts currently being developed in labs and universities, and is revised frequently.

It worth for you to know all the bible of Power Electronics. One said Power System bible is Stevenson's book, on the other hand, Power Electronics' bible is Kassakian too. You can find everything in this book. You will not be regret if you hit this book.

Sorting speculation from documented fact, it offers the fullest and most exacting account ever written of Galois' life and work. It took more than seventy years to fully understand the French mathematician's first memoire (published in 1846) which formulated the famous 'Galois theory' concerning the solvability of algebraic equations by radicals, from which group theory would follow. "Since no thoroughly researched biography of Galois was available, I decided to try and fill the gap, starting off from documentation in archives, and evidence from contemporary memoirs and newspapers." (Preface)

Much of this book is about French politics during Galois' life. In the English edition, the author added a concluding 23 page essay on "The Mathematical Work of Evariste Galois". Without this addition and the bibliographical addition mentioned below, this book would be, for my interests, of no significant value.

Along with the 23 page essay on Galois' mathematics, the author included in the English translation a useful addition to the bibliography: 56 articles and books, listed chronologically, for "Studies on Classical Galois Theory", by which she means "the development of Galois ideas on resolvability of algebraic equations up to the modern abstract point of view, i.e., from Betti (1851) to Artin (1930)."

The only English language books in this list are:
Netto (1892, from German original of 1882) Theory of Substitutions and Its Application to Algebra;
Dickson (1903) Introduction to the Theory of Algebraic Equations;
Cajori (1904) An Introduction to the Modern Theory of Equations;

of one of the strangest chapters in the history of mathematics. For those who know of Galois' life only from E.T.Bell's telling this work will hold surprises and serve to part his overly romantic fog with the clear light of solid scholarship.

The translations in themselves have the pleasing flow, sound, rhythm, and idiom of good English poetry even though... they follow the original Greek text line by line and adhere closely to its literal meaning.

i love this book

I love greek mythology in general so when I took a greek myth class and found out we were reading books from it too, I was excited. this is a really good book, as most greek myth books are in general. will probably read it again and again.

Great Translation

I love this version of Hesiod. I had to get it for a class but I reference the poetry and symbolism constantly. It includes all the gritty things the original did for the most part (unlike the cleaned-up versions in Edith Hamilton's Mythology). So nice to get a relatively un-edited, exciting translation. Well worth it if you need the classics!
