Henri J. M. Nouwen, who wrote more than 40 books, remains one of the most popular spiritual writers of our time. This paperback is a revised version of a volume released in 1987. We are assaulted by images in a society where consumerism comes at us through posters, billboards, television, movies and store windows. But icons are a different thing completely. Nouwen presents meditations on four icons: the icon of the Holy Trinity, the icon of the Virgin of Vladimir, the icon of the Savior of Zvenigorod, and the icon of the Descent of the Spirit: "By giving the icons long and prayerful attention talking about them, reading about them, but mostly just gazing at them in silence I have gradually come to know them by heart. I see them now whether they are physically present or not. I have memorized them as I have memorized the Our Father and the Hail Mary, and I pray with them wherever I go." Icons are a part of the sacred liturgy of the Eastern Orthodox Church and are used in worship services. Nouwen points out that they do not excite our outer senses but speak to our heart. Those who gaze at icons as a spiritual practice believe they draw closer to God in the process. Nouwen presents substantive spiritual analysis of the icon of the Holy Trinity, which he sees as a pathway into the Mystery of God's self-revelation. The icon of the Virgin of Vladimir is an invitation to enter the divine milieu with gratitude and joy. Nouwen sees in the eyes of the icon of the Savior of Zvenigorod a revelation about the mystery of the Incarnation. And, finally, in the icon of the Descent of the Holy Spirit, he feels a celebration of the power and meaning of community. Nouwen concludes: "Working on these meditations has been a great delight. Praying became writing and writing became praying. More energy was granted than consumed in the process. About the Author
Henri J. M. Nouwen is one of the most popular spiritual writers of our time. He wrote more than forty books, among them the bestselling Out of Solitude. He taught at the University of Notre Dame, as well as Yale and Harvard Universities. From 1986 until his death in 1996, he was part of the L Arche Daybreak community in Toronto, where he shared his life with people with mental disabilities.

Robert Lentz, one of America's most original artists, has been painting icons for more than 25 years. His work has been shown around the world, has appeared on the covers of many books and magazines, and is featured with the text of Joan Chittister in the Orbis book A Passion for Life: Fragments from the Face of God. He lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

this book is a fantastic window into the world of icons and their functions

I will echo many reviews here: this book is a fantastic window into the world of icons and their functions. While giving a little history of each of the four icons he uses to illustrate his points, Nouwen spends a lot of time explaining how he came to see different theological and spiritual truths within the icons. Praying with (not to) the icons provides a different medium for prayer that is bound to be helpful for those that try.

This book cannot be recommended enough, and a huge benefit is that the language is clear, concise, and to the point. This is not like other heady religious books.

It's Nouwen again...

I've never read anything by Nouwen that I didn't like. I have been to Eastern Europe several times, and each time, tried to purchase an icon or some religious artifact to remember my trip by. I had seen Orthodox Christians praying with Icons (not praying to, mind you...praying with), and wanted a better understanding of the practice. Nouwen writes that they are to be used like windows into heaven, not as base objects to be worshiped. Nouwen actually takes several icons and explains the meaning behind them (such as the empty space at the table in Rublev's "Trinity") in order to help the reader learn to focus on certain aspects of faith. Offers clarity to the practice of praying with icons. A good companion piece to Linette Martin's "Sacred Doorways".

This is a beautiful book to read if you have an interest in the beautiful icons and the meaning behind them. Perhaps you have seen these icons in Catholic and Orthodox churches here and abroad, icons are a Liturgical Art, and have significant meaning behind each step in the painting process. The author has done a beautiful job of explaining the meaning as he sees it with each of five icons. It is a beautiful book to own.

About the Author
Albena Stambolova is the author of three novels. She has also published a collection of short stories and a psychoanalytical study on Marguerite Duras. She currently lives in Bulgaria, where she works as a psychological and organizational consultant, and is working on a book about fairy tales.

Olga Nikolova completed her PhD at Harvard University, with a dissertation on modern poetry, graphic design, and academic writing. She's been translating the works of Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein in to Bulgarian.

It does not happen as it does...

I was not thrilled with the story as much as I was interested in the title of the book. I felt that the character's lives between the stories of the novel were not tied together well. The first character that is introduced does not really come back into the story until the end and this was disappointing. However, i liked what the author attempted to do when illustrating human beings daily lives whether they are mundane or not the vocabulary to describe each character was satisfactorily.

Sharmadean Reid is an entrepreneur, stylist, and brand consultant who opened the first WAH Nails salon in London in 2009. A trickle of customers turned into a flood, and she has now joined forces with Topshop to roll her salons across the UK.

Poor instructions & requires use of products not available in the USA.

Let me tell you the reasons why I don't like this book.

1. Most of the nail art in this book requires the use of special nail art pens by "Models Own" that are NOT sold in the USA. I can only find them on international ebay and they would have to be shipped overseas. The price of the nails pens are very high ($12.50 each color), and the shipping added to it (approximately $5 each) makes each pen cost $17.50!

2. Some of the designs require nail polish stripers, they are cheap enough in the USA, about $2-$3 for each color, but they are tricky to work with and the author offers very few tips on using them properly.

3. She makes every design sound easy, but unless you are already very good at drawing and/or painting small things, they wont be easy. They will be a mess.

3. There are much better ways to recreate many of her looks using simple tips and tricks found for free on many nail art websites and blogs, that are much better suited to non professional home users, and will give much better results.

4. She does have a few easy designs such as glitter fades, marbling, and adding rhinestones, but they are nothing new or special, and nothing that you cant learn to do for free online using google or youtube.

I would not recommend this book to anyone who doesn't live somewhere where they can get the models own polish pens cheap, or who isn't good at free hand drawing.

I love the tutorials, but they require some pretty specific tools.
I wish there were more tutorials, or photos of the other designs featured in the book.
The style of the book is fun, but doesn't provide a lot of inspiration.

Not an idea book

I expected a book full of ideas and way to make different designs on nails but it barely had any. The ideas that were there were basic. Plus most of the book was talking about WAH Girls and no disrespect but that wasnt what i was interested in at all. It was honestly a waist of $ i could have gotten many more ideas in google.

EE-NAH-NEE-BAY-EE, Singing Man, was born in Clinton, Oklahoma. He is descended from a long line of Chiefs and Warriors from both sides of his family. His mother, Killing After, is full-blooded Southern Arapaho. His father, White Eagle, was half Pawnee and half Kiowa. Singing Man is the Executive Officer of the Oklahoma Intertribal Vietnam Veteran s Honor/Color Guard. Singing Man served in the U. S. Army from 1970 to 1973, becoming a veteran of the Vietnam War in 1970-71. He was decorated twelve times while serving. In 1983, he started his spiritual journey and began to follow the Red Road through the spiritual ceremonies of his people. Singing Man is now retired and assists those who ask for help.

This book changed my life. You do not need to be a veteran to benefit from Singing Mans wisdom. Practice each lesson daily and go with a good heart and you will make progress. I continue to go back and return to these lessons if I have a worry or some other situation that is causing me distress. This book is the real deal. Ive read many others and found this to be good.

This is a good introduction to Pilates, however, the exercises are a bit hard to understand via a book, but it is easy to look the stuff up on YouTube, which is why I didn't dock the book another star. May be something to think of if you are getting as a book for a technophobe, though.

Not basic enough

I'm a 65 year old woman trying to learn Pilates due to back issues. Look at the picture of the front of this
book. I should have known even this book would not be basic enough for me. There are areas in the book that
state "It is so simple you don't even need a picture". I NEED a picture.
This book will not teach you how to breath, finding your neutral position or show you the ten basic exercises that
strengthen but do not hurt or harm back injuries.
Find a good Pilate instructor and pay for one on one instruction until you know what you are doing.

This book gives great examples and thorough descriptions (for beginners). The only downfall is that it could get a little confusing down the road. I selected another book to read along with it for a full understanding of C :) This might not apply to everyone;; I am a beginner to the whole programming world so I needed additional help (the other book) to fully use this book to the best advantage! Overall, great book!! It is pricey but it could be worth it if you're looking for a read in programming in C.

A powerful and stunning tale of launching an empire . . .

This book fulfills the promise that seemed to exist in the pages of the authors first book, "The Pimp Game." From the moment I started reading it, I became instantly consumed with the story of "Along For the Ride."

The characters, the tone, the structure of this book; it contains all characteristics of the "Mickey Royal style." He has the ability to tell a story, no matter if the content becomes gruesome or not, and maintain objective and honest descriptions of the events. It is a controlled storytelling style, like someone who has seen it and been there, and has a few minutes to give you a few details about the way things really are.

The pulse of the story is in his recounting of the hustling that occurred to put together and build the Royal Family Empire. The writing style creates a fast pace-
In the struggle to piece together the necessary ingredients to create what he wants, he encounters a variety of shady characters, strange situations, and weirder circumstances than you could imagine.

Some moments in the book have serious pangs of sadness, and it is great how he is able to also mention the sensitive and delicate details with AS much honesty as the intense ones. The characters have rough lives, and it feels like he tells it like it is.

THIS book IS a necessary read if you have read "The Pimp Game."

Bottom Line: A great read, A MUST-read for any Mickey Royal Fan!

And, if you are searching for some "real" reading material, that will offer a fresh perspective on rising to the top by being a master of the game, this is it!

At first I was reading I was thinking "when will this pick up"... It picked up right after the first chapter and the story was very entertaining and I didnt leave until I read the whole book in one sitting. Anyone who starts this book wont put it down it was awsome. I think you should make a movie out of this very story. I found that by reading your first book it helped me to understand this book better but its not necessary. What a well written book.

I have purchased The Pimp Game and Along for the Ride from author Mickey Royal, and I finished both immediately. I seriously could not stop reading. Very well-written and engaging, I got lost in the book. I am not going to spoil anything, you have to buy it. I am a loyal customer of Mr. Royal's for life. End of review.
