About the Author
Alexander Garvin has combined a career in urban planning and real estate with teaching, architecture, and public service. He is currently President and CEO of AGA Public Realm Strategists. Between 1996 and 2005 he was Managing Director for Planning of NYC2012, the committee to bring the Summer Olympics to New York in 2012. During 2002 2003, he was Vice President for Planning, Design and Development of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation. Over the last 44 years he has held prominent positions in five New York City administrations, including Deputy Commissioner of Housing and City Planning Commissioner.

Garvin is Adjunct Professor of Urban Planning and Management at Yale University, where he has taught a wide range of subjects, including "Introduction to the Study of the City," which for more than 46 years has remained one of the most popular courses in Yale College. In addition, he teaches two courses in the School of Architecture, including a seminar on "Intermediate Planning and Development."

Among other honors, Garvin has received the 2012 Award of Merit from the New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the 2004 Distinguished Service Award from the New York City Chapter of the American Planning Association (APA). The first edition of The American City won the 1996 AIA Book Award in Urbanism.

Garvin is also the author of "Public Parks: The Key to Livable Communities" and "The Planning Game: Lessons from Great Cities". He earned his B.A., M.Arch., and M.U.S. from Yale University.

Haven't even finished, and I find it fantastic.

This book provides a fresh perspective on the issues suppressing pharmaceutical innovation after the passage of a global Intellectual Property regime which was included in the founding of the World Trade Organization. The author gives a detailed, balanced look at issues that block the development of new medicines, particularly in developing markets, while also providing a precise commentary on the origins of the patent regime as a process for spurring "innovation." Her statements and points on the innovation inherent in the imitation of products by generic manufacturers is alone worth the purchase of the book, and this is only one of the early sections.

As an emerging expert in the field, I found Dr. Kilic's interpretations most forthcoming and have so far enjoyed the read. I will update this comment when I have completed the book, but so far (about 40% through), I am not disappointed.

Dr. Kilic is an authority on this subject matter and this book is evidence of it. I don't normally give 5 stars, but this book really helped me understand how IP affect the developing world. It offers a new perspective on innovation and how the majority of medicines are being developed for profit and does not take into consideration actual needs of the population. Finally a refreshing take that challenges current paradigms and allows it's reader to think critically and objectively at the current global innovation crisis. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wishes to truly understand what drives pharmaceutical innovation in a globalized economy.

Not Worth a Fraction of Its Price

If I were the author and publisher, I would not allow potential buyers to "Look Inside" this book. Sadly, though the writer has done much work on her subject (patents, relating especially to pharmaceuticals), her writing and degree of comprehension of the technical issues around drug patents leads to more questions being raised than answered. "Look Inside" at pages 10-11 where she discusses "innovation" and "imitation." After reading this section, do we come away understanding that costs of innovation is higher or lower than those of imitation? No. Now, you would think (as is actually the case) costs of innovation are higher -- especially in drugs. But, citing a single study, she argues that perhaps imitation faces higher costs, because the innovating firm is "always a step ahead" of the imitating firm. What does "step ahead" actually mean? She does not explain. Perhaps, we can guess, she means it in terms of scale of operation -- but this proves nothing. Anyway, she doesn't resolve conflicting study results.

My guess is that she does not want to. She has an agenda, and the facts are being made to fit her theory that patents are mixed or bad for the world in general, and developing countries in particular. How she defines the latter category is not discussed in the pages shown, and I imagine that she leaves the matter open-ended. (The developing countries of Korea and China are not Burundi or Surinam.)

Ms. Kilic certainly will benefit personally from the intellectual property protection of her book, which allows it to be sold at a ridiculous price -- and her publisher will seek to prevent any infringement of her and the company's rights. But this book, sadly given the dearth of writing on this important topic, is not worth a third of its (even discounted Amazon) price.
