Grade 4-7-It is 1928 and 12-year-old Dovey Coe is happy with her life in Indian Creek, NC. Her family has been in the mountains "since the beginning of time." They own their land and are one of the few families who are not beholden to wealthy Homer Caraway. Dovey guards her siblings closely. She taught her deaf older brother how to read books and lips, and worries about her older sister, Caroline, who seems to have forgotten her plans to go to teacher's college after uppity Parnell Caraway (Dovey's least favorite person) starts calling on her. How protective a little sister she actually is, remains to be seen-she tells readers in the first paragraph that she is being tried for Parnell's murder, then proceeds to recount what happened. The story maintains a very fast pace, and Dovey is an original character who speaks with a mountain twang that brings the vivid setting to life without distracting from the plot. The background and characters are carefully developed and appealing. Dovey's adventures will appeal to fans of Avi's The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle (Orchard, 1990), while the mystery follows conventions of the genre and is explained in an entirely satisfactory manner.

You'll Love Dovey!

I'm completely impressed with Frances O'Roark Dowell's ability to create such a lovable and inspiratonal character! The main character, Dovey, is accused of the murder of her sister's evil suitor, Parnell. Her honesty--the open admission that she cared nothing for Parnell--adds to her culpability. You'll come to love the spirit of small-town, USA as you get to know Dovey, her brother Amos, and the rest of the characters. By the time you put down this book, Dovey will have inspired to you to be true to your real self and to stand up for what you know is right. Dovey is able to inspire growth in other characters as well, including her oh-so-pretty big sister and her well-educated court-appointed attorney. What I appreciate most about this novel is that Dovey is able to be tough-minded and strong-willed without going "over the top" in the unrealistic way the many novel and movie charactres do. I recommended Dovey Coe not only to young adolescent girls but also to boys who will enjoy the mysterious elements and surprise ending.

Everybody knows Dovey hates her older sister's boyfriend, so when he is mysteriously murdered, and Dovey found in the scene of the crime when the body is discovered, everyone thinks she is the murderer, but she knows she isn't guilty. Dovey only hopes she can convince the judge. Dovey Coe is an original, funny, and suspenseful book. I recommend it to middle school readers looking for a mystery.
Dovey Coe is a very original book. Dovey Coe lives with her Mother, Father, older sister Caroline, and her deaf brother, Amos. Caroline is always though of as much prettier than Dovey, Caroline gets many suitors, while Dovey gets none. They live in rural, Indian Creek, North Carolina. Indian Creek is a small town. Dovey's sister, Caroline is being courted my Parnell the son of the richest family, the Caraways, is known for being snobby, rude, and conceited. Dovey is terribly upset when Caroline accepts. Parnell is at the Coe's house all the time. He treats Caroline very nicely, but is very rude to Dovey and treats her brother Amos like he's stupid, just because he can't hear. Amos and Dovey are very close and often go searching in the woods for herbs, Amos' dogs, Tom and Huck sniff them out so Amos and Dovey can sell them to doctors. Dovey also taught Amos to read and write. Caroline dreams of going to college, and then becoming a teacher.
Dovey Coe is a very funny book. Dovey and her family hold a going away party for Caroline; they hire a band, prepare a lot of food, and invite a large number of people. Once everyone arrives, Parnell gets up on stage to make a toast, during which he announces Caroline shouldn't go to college because she is too pretty, and then he asks her to marry him. Caroline refuses because of how rude he was. Parnell is very upset and leaves the party. Dovey and a friend of hers, Wilson, start courting. Wilson is very nice to Dovey and appreciates her for who she is.
The pages of Dovey Coe are filled with suspense, mystery and excitement. When Dovey's parents go to bring Caroline to teacher's college, Dovey and Amos go to stay with their grandparents. Dovey forgot something so runs home to get it. Paris Caraway, Parnell's little sister comes over and tells Dovey that Parnell has Tom locked up in his father's store because they got away. Dovey goes with her to get him. When Dovey arrives she has to go to the back storage room to get her brother's dog, Tom is there but so is Parnell. Dovey can tell right away that he is drunk. When Parnell tries to throw a brick at Tom, Dovey pulls out her pocket knife and just barely scratches Parnell. The next thing she knows she feels Huck licking her face, she sees Tom dead, Parnell's mother comes in, and sees him dead with no one but Dovey in the room. The trial comes and a lawyer is assigned to Dovey's case. The coroners reports that Parnell was killed by a blow to the head, they think it was from a soda canister, a bit of blood is found on the canister, they believe whoever killed Parnell accidentally cut themselves on the canister. Dovey seems to be losing the trial, when it lets out for a break. Dovey asks the lawyer what his plan is, he doesn't have one. Dovey has an idea from looking at the evidence table, where the soda canister is sitting. Dovey knows it looks to heavy for her to pick up. She demonstrates for the judge, and the case is closed. A few weeks latter a body is found in a creek, it is a fugitive with a cut where the sheriff believes he was cut by the canister, the sheriff decides he is the murder. After the trial is over, Dovey realizes the only way Huck could have gotten in the storage room Amos came into the store looking for Dovey, when he sees Parnell with the brick, and Dovey on the floor he picks up the soda canister and hits Parnell with it. He runs away, scared after he realized he killed Parnell. Dovey realizes that Amos saved her life, Parnell probably would have killed her if Amos hadn't killed him. Amos writes a letter to Dovey and explains he didn't mean to kill Parnell, that he only did it to save Dovey.
Dovey Coe is a mystery, a funny book, and original story. It is a quick and enjoyable read. I recommend it to readers looking for a suspenseful mystery.
