A Grief Observed, by C.S. Lewis

In April 1956, C.S. Lewis, a confirmed bachelor, married Joy Davidman, an American poet with two small children. After four brief, intensely happy years, Lewis found himself alone again, and inconsolable. To defend himself against the loss of belief in God, Lewis wrote this journal, an eloquent statement of rediscovered faith. In it he freely confesses his doubts, his rage, and his awareness of human frailty. In it he finds again the way back to life.

Amazon.com Review
C.S. Lewis joined the human race when his wife, Joy Gresham, died of cancer. Lewis, the Oxford don whose Christian apologetics make it seem like he's got an answer for everything, experienced crushing doubt for the first time after his wife's tragic death. A Grief Observed contains his epigrammatic reflections on that period: "Your bid--for God or no God, for a good God or the Cosmic Sadist, for eternal life or nonentity--will not be serious if nothing much is staked on it. And you will never discover how serious it was until the stakes are raised horribly high," Lewis writes. "Nothing will shake a man--or at any rate a man like me--out of his merely verbal thinking and his merely notional beliefs. He has to be knocked silly before he comes to his senses. Only torture will bring out the truth. Only under torture does he discover it himself." This is the book that inspired the film Shadowlands, but it is more wrenching, more revelatory, and more real than the movie. It is a beautiful and unflinchingly honest record of how even a stalwart believer can lose all sense of meaning in the universe, and how he can gradually regain his bearings. --Michael Joseph Gross

The Only Helpful Book on Grieving I've Found
By JB - A Guy
I found this book 20 years ago when my beautiful daughter was stillborn. Of all of the things offered to me at the time, this was the only thing I read that provided any comfort. I am reading again now when a close friend has taken his own life and left a young, beautiful family behind. Neither event makes any sense to me. Both challenge my faith. You will not find any neat answers, cosmic solutions or expressions of God that will "help you get through it." You will read the journal of a man devastated by his loss. He writes of his grief as he observes it. He articulates the great internal battle that I suffered.

If you are grieving an enormous loss, you may find comfort here. I can't explain why, as C.S. Lewis did not include words of comfort. I have found absolutely no comfort in anything else I have read - with titles like Roses in December and so on. They tend to be written after the author had worked through the grief and can speak of it with the clarity of hindsight that the experience taught them. Well, when you are in the depths of sorrow, nothing makes any sense. Everything you believed has been knocked over. And that is exactly what C.S. Lewis describes in his own grief. It is profound. If you have not suffered a devastating loss, this book might not communicate well to you. But if you have, you will find a great mind and wonderful writer who understands your grief well enough to put words to it.

An author who succeeds in taking us into his own experience
By Natalie Grenfell
Has grief ever been so well described? I think not. The author kept a journal during his time of grief and shares it with us. His grief is easy to feel because of Lewis' ability to describe it so well. If a reader is experiencing grief, he or she will know that they are not alone in their feelings. I was particularly moved with Lewis telling us about a day in which he started loudly sobbing in his chair. He was worried about the effect this might have on his adopted son, whose mother he had married, but the author simply couldn't help crying like that right then. From other books about Lewis' life, we learn that that the adopted son had a great love for the author because Lewis took time to do with him things that he thought he would like, and he talked to this son not in a condescending way, as child, but as if he were a adult. The son loved his new dad so much that he later made it his vocation to keep publishing Lewis' work and to allow others to republish only when he was sure they would do so correctly.

Lewis' marriage at a relatively older age than normal to a young woman who died several years later was originally a marriage of "convenience," even though both of them were writers and did have that in common. Lewis was quite surprised, however, to find that it became a very close and loving relationship. He never expected his grief to be so profound when his wife died of cancer, but in fact, her death was most devastating to him. Thankfully, for the rest of us, he was able to take us into his own experience so that a sense of the grief became ours as well.

If you haven't had a close friend or family member die yet, I would suggest you buy this book so that it will be in your library when you need it.

A search for faith at a most tragic time for the readers.
By Richard R. Mccormick
I first read this work after we had lost our dear son. It took time before I was ready to absorb the content of the wrenching passage through grief that Lewis presented, but I found some important understanding that helped. I have reread the work several times and have gained more each time.
I have since given this book to others that have suffered losses. I do think that it would not resonate that well with someone that was not in that awful place of grieving for a loved one. Without that pall, I think the reader may fail to grasp what Lewis is telling us.
Fair warning. This is not "easy" reading, but it can be an important help.
